10th Distinguished Labor Leader Lecture

On Monday, March 24, 2014 (the first day back from Spring Break), at 4:00pm to 5:00pm, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten will deliver the Distinguished Labor Leader Lecture.  The event will take place in the auditorium.

In addition to leading the AFL-CIO affiliated teachers union,
Weingarten is one of the major players in the public discourse over
education reform.  She is also an incredibly dynamic speaker.

Networking opportunity with Amanda Sonneborn of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP

As you know, there is an increasing demand among legal employers for law graduates who have “practical” or “experiential” skills.  Chicago-Kent and the Labor/Employment Law Certificate Program have designed a curriculum that includes Clinical opportunities, other practicum opportunities, mentoring, and  speakers to ensure that all our students have ample opportunity to learn something about the practice of law BEFORE graduation.
Client contact is not something we can easily teach in law school classes, although we do have the Employment Litigation simulation and Clinical classes.  But for those who want to learn from an expert, we have a program you should plan to attend.
Client Management/Project Management — What Is It and Why Is It Important to My Success as a Lawyer?
Tuesday, April 1, 4:30 — 5:50 p.m., room 570
Amanda Sonneborn is a partner in the Labor & Employment Department at Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, a nationwide firm with its roots in Chicago.  Ms. Sonneborn advises clients in industries from health care to retail to gaming on both labor relations law and other employment issues.  She helps design and lead training courses for Seyfarth clients, teaches as an adjunct faculty member here at Chicago-Kent, and is active in a wide variety of management-side activities.
Ms. Sonneborn will talk about clients how to get them, how to manage their expectations and their projects, and generally what to do to forge a successful relationship with them.   There will be plenty of time for questions.
Refreshments will be served.

Students may attend the conferences free of charge, but you must register in advance by e-mailing clestaff@kentlaw.edu.  If you wish to partake in the food events (continental breakfast, luncheon and end of conference reception) and wish a copy of the conference course book, then you must volunteer to assist with the registration table in the morning.  This means rising early to be at the law school early in the morning (7 a.m., I believe) but it is well worth it as it is at the luncheon and reception where you will find the best networking.  If you wish to volunteer to assist with registration, please indicate that in your e-mail to clestaff.
