9 November 06: The Legality of Covert Operations by Professor Alberto Coll, 1-2 p.m. in room 155. This was our first speaker event, and it was a well-attended success. Many thanks to Professor Coll and to all who attended!
Professor Coll was recently named President of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University and will be our inaugural speaker. Prior to joining the faculty at DePaul, Professor Coll was a dean at the U.S. Naval War College and a senior official in the administration of President George H. W. Bush. As Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for President George H. W. Bush, Professor Coll oversaw the Defense Department’s policy, strategy and budget for special operations forces and low-intensity conflict, including counterterrorism. 1 November 06: Kent Faculty Panel on Privacy and the Constitution, 3:00 pm in room C50. Panelists included: Dean Krent, Professor Margaret Stewart, Professor Kathy Baker; moderated by Professor Mark Rosen. Topics scheduled for discussion: domestic surveillance, the Patriot Act, legal issues related to gay marriage, and upcoming abortion cases including the Gonzales case on the docket for this term. Sponsored by the American Constitution Society and co-sponsored by the Chicago-Kent Lambdas.
24 October 06: The new members of the Executive Committee were voted for at this meeting. Congratulations to: Dana Lobelle (Treasurer), Caitlin Ewing (Secretary), Sal Lopez (Member-at-Large), and Ken Suh (Member-at-Large). Also, the members present reviewed and ratified the NS LS constitution.
19 October 06: Professor Neal Katyal from Georgetown University spoke in the Auditorium about his experience representing the plaintiff in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. The American Constitution Society sponsored this well-attended event.
11 October 06: General Interest Meeting. Although Professor Rosen had to cancel his appearance, our inaugural meeting was a success. Nineteen students came and suggested topics for future events. The suggestions ranged from “national security law in relationship to journalism” to “the effect of national security law on local law enforcement” to “the relationship between national security law and immigration.”
The NSLS President also spoke about the group’s mission, and presented a rough plan for rest of the semester and into the next one that included a panel discussion with agencies that recruit attorneys and speaker events.
