Hello All! My name is Fernando H. Silva and I am a 2L at Chicago Kent College of Law. I joined ILS as a 1L Representative and now serve on the E-Board as it’s Secretary. Like many who are on the board for ILS, I too have a personal connection with immigration law.
My decision for coming to law school not only has a great deal to do with my interest in public service but with my experiences growing up watching friends and family denied opportunities due to their undocumented status despite their qualifications. I knew from then, that I wanted to use my education to become a legal advocate for the immigrant community.
This Summer I clerked for the Mexican American Legal Fund (MALDEF). My work included ensuring immigrant participation in the 2020 census to litigating employment issues involving DACA recipients. My knowledge of law and government systems has grown immensely this Summer but I still have much to learn.
I hope to practice immigration law or civil rights law after graduating. In the meantime, I hope to learn a lot from ILS and gain more valuable experience that can help me give back to my community
