IPLS will be hosting a panel discussion about the state of copyright law as it pertains to the music industry, as well as possible reforms that may take place. A reception will follow the panel in the Chicago-Kent lobby. The event has been approved for 1.5 CLE credits. The panel will consist of Regan Smith, Brie Elpert, and Professor Peter DiCola.
Reagan Smith is Assistant General Counsel for the United States Copyright Office. In this role, Regan assists the General Counsel on legal issues including litigation, policy studies, and regulatory proceedings. Regan also helps provide legal advice and assistance to the Licensing Division of the USCO, and to various federal agencies, including the Department of Justice.
Brie Elpert is an attorney with SoundExchange. Her primary role is the enforcement of the statutory license that SoundExchange administers to benefit artists and copyright owners. To that end she, along with the rest of the Licensing & Enforcement team, is responsible for bringing digital radio services into compliance with the statutory license.
Peter DiCola is an Associate Professor of Law at Northwestern University. Prof. DiCola uses empirical methods and applied economic models to study intellectual property law, media regulation, and their intersection. Prof. DiCola’s research has centered on the music industry and related industries.
