Panelists

Judith L. Grubner is a partner at Arnstein & Lehr LLP in the firm’s Chicago office, specializing in intellectual property law. She has concentrated her practice on intellectual property, business and litigation.  She currently practices in trademarks, copyrights, advertising, unfair competition, domain name disputes, and sweepstakes, contests and game promotions law.
Ms. Grubner is a member of the American Bar Association Intellectual Property Section, Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, and Chicago Bar Association.  She has published numerous articles and has been a lecturer in the fields of trademark, copyright and sweepstakes law for over 25 years.  She graduated from Oberlin College in 1973 and The George Washington University National Law Center in 1976.  She is admitted to the state and federal courts in Illinois and the District of Columbia, including the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, as well as several other U.S. District Courts and U.S. Courts of Appeals.

Joseph F. Schmidt has over 30 years of experience attending to clients’ intellectual property and business matters. He represents clients in trademark infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition, false advertising and other IP matters in federal and state courts. He also handles opposition and cancellation proceedings in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and domain name dispute proceedings. Additionally, Joe is an experienced lead trial counsel with success in both bench and jury trials and appeals. His trial practice is enhanced by his extensive experience with the clearance, registration, protection and enforcement of trademarks, trade dress, and copyrights in the U.S. and internationally.

He also has extensive experience in licensing, advertising substantiation/false advertising, U.S. and international trademark portfolio management, manufacturing and distribution agreements, and U.S. Customs protection and enforcement. Mr. Schmidt formerly taught the IP strategies course as an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Mariano Municoy worked during his legal studies in different courts in Argentina and received his law degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 2001 with specialization on administrative law. In 2002 he became an IP Agent and in 2004 he received an LL.M. in International Intellectual Property Law with high honors from Chicago-Kent where this year he has taught the class Trademark Law in Latin America. In 2008, Mariano completed an LL.M. in Law and Economics from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina where his final thesis focused on the interplay between patent rights and antitrust law under Argentinean law. His academic interests include teaching different courses on IP legal and business matters including classes within the LLM on Latin American Law organized since 2013 among WIPO, Austral University and INPI (the Argentina PTO). Mariano regularly publishes works on IP matters in local and international forums.

Since 2005 Mariano works for the Latin American IP law firm Moeller IP Advisors where advises and designs legal strategies related to patents, trademarks, domain names and copyright protections as well as anti-counterfeiting and transfer of technology matters. Mariano is an active member of different organizations like the ABA, INTA, IPO, RAPS, among others.
