Fall Clothing Drive, now through 12/4/2021: Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK), The Chicago-Kent Racial Equity and Advocacy Alliance (REAA), and Women in Law (WIL)—in partnership with the Design Museum of Chicago—are pleased to sponsor a Fall Clothing and Toy Drive to benefit The Women’s Treatment Center (TWTC) in Chicago. TWTC served as the sole substance abuse treatment center in Illinois focused solely on women and specializing in treatment framed and informed by women’s issues. However, the pandemic forced TWTC to shutter its physical space, and many women were displaced. While TWTC has found new arrangements for many of the women and children it serves, these women and their children remain in need of clothing in general—and toys (!) for this upcoming holiday season. PACCK, REAA, and WIL ask you to open your hearts (and your closets!) and donate this fall to support these women and their families as they transition through recovery. The Design Museum will accept donations now through December 4, 2021. You may donate via drop-off, delivery, or mail, directly to:

Writing Competition Winners!

The winner of the inaugural A More Perfect Union: A Racial Justice Writing Competition is Chloe Bell, for her paper entitled The Lasting Impact of Housing Discrimination on Industrial Development, Environmental Justice, and Land Use. Read all about Chloe’s impactful article here.

Congratulations also go to Anthony Hao, who was awarded an honorable mention for his paper entitled Litigating Bivens Actions On Behalf of Asylum Seekers In Family Separation Context. Finally, congratulations to Jaylin McClinton for winning the naming contest for the new competition for his submission, A More Perfect Union.

Establishing the writing competition was a commitment from the faculty in its 2020 Antiracism Statement, and is meant to encourage papers that shine a light on issues of racial injustice. Submissions for the 2022 A More Perfect Union writing competition, with a $1,000 prize for the winning submission, will be solicited in January!

American Bar Association (ABA):

• Pro Bono National Celebration 10/24 – 10/30

  • During the 2021 National Celebration of Pro Bono, October 24-30, 2021, the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service encourages programs to sponsor a book club for your members and volunteers and invites all programs to highlight “A Knock at Midnight.” On October 27, 2021 at 4pmET/3pmCT, join us for a complimentary webinar discussion with Brittany K.   • An alternative to traditional moot court competitions, this is organized by the Section’s Young Lawyer’s Form

  • Asks 2 person teams of students to solve a complex business problem that might arise in everyday tax practice

  • Problem Release Date: September 7, 2021, released by 5pm ET

  • Submission Deadline: November 8, 2021, by or before 5pm ET

• Just The Beginning Scholar Prep Program

  • OUR MISSION is to encourage students of color and from other underrepresented groups to pursue career and leadership opportunities in the law.

  • Scholar Prep is a fun and educational virtual program designed to introduce middle and high students to the legal field.

  • Kids learn about different areas of law during a one-hour session which would involve a 45-minute interactive activity and a 10-minute Q&A session.

APALSA: Join APALSA as we acknowledge World Mental Health Day on October 10th through a panel we are hosting on October 19th via Zoom at 4:30pm. Mental health is already heavily stigmatized, but every culture treats it differently; APALSA would like to address the stress put on the Asian American community to suppress their mental health concerns, thereby invalidating their mental well-being.

The panel will feature DJ Ida, Executive Director of National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association; Ailin Chang, Program Coordinator of Midwest Asian Health Association, Jonas Ginsburg, Clinical Supervisor of Midwest Asian Health Association, and attorneys from McGuireWoods. Each member will speak about how they advocate for mental health, followed by a Q&A with the panelists, so please feel free to submit questions to APALSA regarding anything.

Bankruptcy, Insolvency and Restructuring Association: The Bankruptcy, Insolvency and Restructuring Association is excited to announce that our first general body meeting will be on Tuesday, October 19th at 12:00 PM onbira if you have any questions.

Black Law Students Association (BLSA):

1L Success Workshop on Friday, 10/29

On Friday, October 29th, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) CDT, join BLSA in partnership with APALSA, First-Gen, HLLSA, MLSA, and Women in Law as we welcome Professor Peter T. Wendel to lead a workshop focused on tips, study strategies, and note-taking methods that are catered towards first-year law students. Pizza will be served!

Child & Family Law Society (CFLS): Child and Family Law Society will be hosting our first General Body Meeting on Tuesday, November 2nd from 12:00-1:00 p.m. via Zoom. Criminal Law Society: Women in Crim Law Panel Event! Join the Criminal Law Society and Women in Law Society on Thursday, October 28th at 5 pm for a panel discussion with panelists ranging from a Judge, State’s Attorney, and Public defender. The event will be hybrid — be on the lookout for more information!

First Generation Law Student Association: Building Success: A First-Gen and Women in Law Panel, Friday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m.: Join the First-Generation Law Student Association and Women in Law for an evening with a panel of successful female attorneys in a broad spectrum of fields. Marlén Cortez Morris is a Labor & Employment litigator and shareholder at Ogletree Deakins; Maria Martinez is Legislative Counsel at the City of Chicago; Amy Peña is in house General Counsel at the Chicago Community Trust; and Laurie Silvestri is the Director of the C-K Upper-Level Legal Writing Program. ILS Immigration Law Career Panel: ILS will be hosting an Immigration Law Career Panel on October 27 from 6-8pm. The career panel is open to any law students interested in learning about the different areas of immigration law. We encourage anyone to drop by even if you are unsure about whether you want to practice immigration law, this is the perfect opportunity to find out if it’s the right area of law for you!The panel will answer questions from the E-Board and our members. We will have attorneys from employment-based immigration to non-profit work (detailed in the attached flyer). Hope to see you there! The event will be entirely remote to allow all attorneys and students for an engaging experience. Zoom link is provided in the flyer attached!

Kent Justice Foundation (KJF): Join Kent Justice Foundation for our second annual Justice Walk! On Saturday, October 23rd, KJF will host an in-person walk-a-thon event at 10 a.m. at Skinner Track in West Loop followed by a happy hour event at Emporium from 1-3 pm. If you would like to participate in the Justice Walk, either virtually through social media or in-person, there is a kjf. There are COVID-19 guidelines that will be required, so please make sure to bring a mask and social distance as much as possible. We hope to see you there!

Save the Date! Diversity Summer Programs Information Session – Tuesday, October 26 at 12:00 pm: Join CSO on October 26 for a run down of diversity summer program opportunities. We will discuss programs such as the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Diversity Summer Internship Program, The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP), the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholars Program, and others. 9/15-10/15: Hispanic Heritage Month	We are halfway through Hispanic Heritage Month, which comes to a close on October 15th. This month of celebration is one that acknowledges the contributions the Hispanic community has made throughout the country and those contributions that are yet to come. It is meant to celebrate not only the culture of the Hispanic people, but the influence this culture has on creating the United States we live and thrive in today. With the time left to honor Hispanic heritage, HLLSA would like to take this opportunity to highlight the wide range of experiences and journeys that encompass Latinidad and the Hispanic identity. Since the recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month in 1968, this month has served as a platform to showcase the success of those who identify as Hispanic, Afro-Latino, Latiné,Latino/a/x. HLLSA not only invites you to celebrate the success of those like Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Dean Jennifer Rosato Perea, Environmental, Labor, and Civil Rights Activist Dolores Huerta; but invites you to reflect on how you as a future lawyer can honor and authentically support the experiences of those around you. Let us consider how we can celebrate, support, and appreciate the diverse community that makes up Chicago-Kent. ¡Juntos somos mejores!
11/1 – 11/2: Day of the Dead	The practice and tradition of Day of the Dead pre-dates pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The Aztecs and several indigenous communities, in what is now known as modern day Mexico, take this period to honor the lives of those who have passed away. Traditionally, Day of the Dead begins on November 1st and ends on November 2nd. This practice is not a form of grieving but instead a celebration of the memories and stories of ancestors and our loved ones. In order to spark those memories, individuals either decorate the grave site or create an altar, called an ofrenda. Both options provide a space to showcase the personalities and values of those who have passed. Some altars have candles, marigolds or cempasuchiles; photos; a person’s favorite drink or food; and cherished items. Within the practice of Day of the Dead, it is believed that during this time the spirit world and earthly world come together to celebrate. With that said, please join HLLSA, ILS, and ACPLS as we come together to create an ofrenda to celebrate our loved ones. All are welcome to participate. Navigating law school is in itself a challenging journey and surviving a pandemic is an added layer. So, be kind to yourselves and celebrate each other by joining us as we share stories and create a communal altar on October 25th in the concourse.
