Announcements

Conviser Breakfast: Professor Conviser will be hosting a welcome breakfast on Tuesday, August 23rd from 9:00am-10:30am in the lobby.

Yoga in the Fitness Center: Starting on Tuesday, August 30th, there will be yoga in the fitness center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am-10:00am throughout the semester. Yoga mats and blocks will be provided!

From Career Services: A representative from Army JAG will be on-campus Monday, August 22 and Tuesday, August 23 to speak with students about employment opportunities as a JAG officer. Captain Eliasen will be located at the table outside the SPAK throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday. Stop by to learn more about a potential career with the US Army!

Books for 1Ls: All required first-year books and materials for entering students may be purchased at the Chicago-Kent bookstore. You may order your books online at Chicago-Kent Bookstore or in person. The bookstore is located on the 3rd level of the law school and can be reached at (312) 906-5606.

Add/Drop Period: The add/drop period for Fall 2022 ends on Friday, September 2, at 9:00pm. You may add an open course without special permission until the end of the first week of classes. During the second week, however, you may add an open course only with permission of the instructor. You may not add a course after Friday, September 2, at 9:00pm.

Student Organization Leadership: If you are part of leadership for an organization and have not received an email or signed up for leadership training, we will consider the organization defunct unless you fill out the SBA Leadership Contact Info Form and RSVP for the Leadership Training by August 24th.

New Organization Requests: If you are planning to form a new organization, please reach out to the SBA with bylaws, a faculty advisor (optional) and preliminary executive board membership. New student organizations can be considered throughout the year, but if you would like to be included for leadership training and the org fair, you will need to let us know by August 24th.

1. Add the SBA Calendar to your Google Calendar by following these instructions.

2. Attend the student organization fair on Tuesday, August 30th.

3. Read the SBA Newsletter, which will be sent to your email every Monday morning.

4. Follow the SBA Instagram account: @sbachicagokentlaw.

5. Subscribe to receive notifications from the SBA Event Calendar. Instructions are here.

6. Reach out to SBA at any time with any questions.

Student Organizations

Student Organization Fair: The 2022-2023 Student Organization Fair will take place on Tuesday, August 30th at 10:00am-7:00pm. This is a great opportunity for 1Ls & returning students to explore the different student organizations at Chicago-Kent! A sign-up for student organizations will be sent separately!

The First-Generation Law Student Association (First-Gen): First-Gen seeks to bridge the success gap for students who are the first in their families to attend law school. We serve as a resource for first-gen law students by hosting learning events, facilitating networking opportunities, and being a forum for free discussion on topics that affect first-generation law students. Sign-up as a First-Gen member firstgen for more information.

Welcome Week(s): Come out and kick-off the school year with some fun events hosted by SBA! There will be a number of events from August 22nd – September 1st. Come out to as many as you can!

• Monday 8/22: Game Night (4-7 PM) in the 6th Floor Lunchroom! Bags, giant jenga, kanjam, etc. Come hang out, meet students, and play some games before or after class!

• Tuesday 8/23:

  • Breakfast with Professor Conviser from 9:00-10:30 AM in the lobby!

  • Save the Last Dance as part of the Millennium Park Summer Film Series. Movie starts at 6:30 PM, so meet in the lobby at 5:30 PM to walk together, or find our group at Millenium Park at 6:00 PM. BYO blanket, food, and beverages.

• Wednesday 8/24: Nintendo Night! MarioKart and Super Smash Bros. in the Student Rec Room (Rm. 570) from 4-7 PM, drop by before or after class to play!

• Thursday 8/25: “Bar Review” (Happy Hour) at Dylan’s Bar and Grill from 4-7 PM! Relax and unwind with other students at the local Tavern. Students will purchase their own food and beverages. Bar Review at Dylan’s will be a weekly event for whenever you want to celebrate a job well done of another week of law school completed.

• Friday 8/26: White Sox Game at 6:30 PM! SBA will be purchasing group tickets – please RSVP here by Wednesday 8/24. Meet in the lobby at 5:30 PM to travel to the game together!

• Monday 8/29: Ice Cream Social 3:30 – 4:30 PM & 5:30 – 6:00 PM

• Tuesday 8/30: SBA Student Org Fair 10 AM – 7 PM! More details to follow.

• Wednesday 8/31: Coffee tasting provided by Reprise Coffee Roasters in the Lobby from 9 AM – 12 PM. Speak with a coffee expert and learn about the different brews available, then take a cup to go!

  • Free coffee from the roastery will also be available to evening students in the Lobby from 5-6 PM.

• Thursday 9/1: Bar Review at Dylan’s Tavern and Grill!

Future Deadlines

September 1st: If you carry your own personal health insurance and would like to opt-out of the school’s required health insurance, you must complete this waiver before September 1st.

September 2nd: Add/drop period ends.

September 5th: All full-time J.D. students are enrolled in the U-Pass program. Your current Ventra U-Pass card will be activated to work from Monday, August 22 (the first day of regular classes) through Friday, December 16 (the last day of exams). The mandatory fee of $145 for the Fall semester will be billed to your student account. Students may choose to OPT OUT of the UPASS program for the semester by completing the Fall 2022 Opt-Out Form by September 5th. The form must be completed by this deadline to ensure your student account will not be billed the UPass fee.
