Important Events:

April – Ramadan

On behalf of the Muslim Law Student Association, we would like to extend a warm Ramadan Mubarak to the Chicago-Kent community. Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, marks the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This year, Ramadan will run for the full month of April. Every day for 30 days, Muslims around the world will abstain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. This is a time of year dedicated to worship, spiritual reflection, and community.

To our non-Muslim brothers and sisters: after just closing out a Diversity Month focused on solidarity on campus, we’re excited to carry that mission into the final month of the semester, and we’re grateful for and humbled from the showing of support from our peers thus far.

Below we’ve answered some common questions Muslims frequently get during Ramadan, as well as heads-up for the coming month:

  1. Yes, not even water! For Muslims, fasting means no food or drink from sunrise to sunset.

  2. Yes, you can eat and drink in front of us. Although your Muslim peers will be fasting these next 30 days, please don’t feel obligated to let this affect your daily life. (We do, however, ask that you please ignore our growling stomachs.)

  3. Yes, you can absolutely fast with us! Many non-Muslims participate in Ramadan alongside their Muslim friends and family, and those days of fasting are by far the most fun. Fasting is a physically and mentally challenging experience, and if you are curious about it, please feel free to join us. But always remember to listen to your body and to only fast if you are physically able!

  4. Yes, you can say “Happy Ramadan.” Ramadan Mubarak translates directly to Happy Ramadan, and Muslims are glad to hear either one.

  5. We will likely be night owls for the next month. Muslims tend to stay up later in the night and wake up later in the morning due to prayer during Ramadan (if possible). So if you receive an email or text at 3:00am, just pretend it’s regular business hours!

  6. There are times Muslims cannot fast. Any Muslim who is very young, elderly, sick, pregnant, menstruating, actively in need of medication, or not able-bodied, does not fast for Ramadan. This exclusion extends to those who are traveling, and many others. Essentially, whenever physical or mental health presents any concern, Muslims do not fast.

We wish you a fruitful month full of blessings and happiness and a successful rest of the school year.
