Legal Externship Program: All Summer Legal Externship Program applications are due on or before Monday, May 2, 2022, and Summer Judicial Externship Program (if you secured your own) by Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Information on the programs and the application forms themselves can be found on Symplicity and the externship website.
Palmer Lecture: The 2021 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize has been awarded to Jens David Ohlin who is the Allan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law at Cornell Law School and a specialist in international law for his book Election Interference: International Law and the Future of Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2020). The annual prize honors exemplary works of scholarship exploring the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary American society.
Dean Ohlin will visit Chicago-Kent on Wednesday, April 13th. The public lecture will be at 3 pm. Please register here.

Civil Rights Litigation Conference: Please join us for the 38th Annual Section 1983 Civil Rights Litigation Conference on April 20-21, 2022. This two-day virtual conference will provide up-to-date information on the latest cases, trends, and strategies affecting §1983 litigation.

Active Aggressor Response and Preparedness Training: In conjunction with the IIT Public Safety Department, we are hosting an Active Aggressor Response and Preparedness training via Zoom for students on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 (information below).
The information that will be shared is critical to protect you and our community in the event of an Active Aggressor situation in our building.

Book Drive: REAA and SBA are extending their book drive through Tuesday, April 12th for Midwest Books to Prisoners, an organization that supports inmates by providing reading materials free of charge. They accept a wide range of books, including magazines, textbooks, novels, scientific journals, nonfiction, poetry and essay collections. Find donation boxes on level C (by the printer) and level 1 (by security).
Bar Exam Panel with recent CK grads and bar takers: Join us for an all things bar exam discussion, featuring recent CK graduates on Wednesday, April 20th at 3PM in room C50. The graduate panelists will discuss their experiences, provide their thoughts on how best to prepare for and take a bar exam, and will be available for questions. This is a great opportunity to learn more about bar prep from those that have recently experienced it. LLM Students: LLM Bar Exam Info Session! Join us for a discussion about the New York, California, and Illinois Bar Exams and for answers to questions you may have about other states bar exams. We will meet in room 520 on Wednesday, April 27th at 3PM. You are encouraged to attend in person, but a zoom option will be available. Please register here to attend. ACLU and ACPLS Creative Writing Contest: On behalf of the ACLU of Chicago-Kent and the ACPLS, we invite you to participate in our annual creative writing contest. This year’s theme is justice. This could be in any sense of the word and does not have to be remotely law school-related. There are two categories for submissions, long and short pieces. First and second place winners will be chosen from each category and will receive $100 or $50, respectively. Please see our flyer for more information!!

ABA Writing Competition: The goal of the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law student writing contest is to encourage and reward law student writing on the subjects of real property or trust and estate law. It is designed to attract students to these law specialties, and to encourage scholarship and interest in these areas. Articles submitted for judging are encouraged to be of timely topics and have not been previously published. This contest is open to all J.D. and LL.M students currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.

The ABA Tax Section is excited to host their first free hybrid meeting on April 11 in Washington, DC, and virtually.
Please join them for the launch of a new Tax Section series: Pathways to Careers in Tax Law! Seasoned practitioners and active members of the Tax Section will provide a substantive overview of different areas of tax through unique presentations colored by engaging tales from their careers. You will not only gain an understanding of the area of tax law but will be entertained inspired and challenged to envision how your own career path can lead you to fulfilling work.
Virtual Law Day Event for Young Adults: Toward a More Perfect Union, Perspectives on Practice and the Constitution

Muslim Law Student Association (MLSA): MLSA would like to invite all students and faculty at Chicago-Kent to share the joy of Ramadan with their Muslim peers as we break our fast (iftar) on Tuesday, April 19! After a short program about Ramadan and Eid and words of thanks from the MLSA board, we will break fast at Maghrib (sunset), followed by prayer. The event will be held in the 2nd floor Spak from 7pm-8pm. Please RSVP here by April 14 (5pm) with your dinner order. We look forward to seeing everyone!
Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK): Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK) seeks to assist our first year students by distributing our financial reserves to those who need additional financial assistance to effectively participate in oral arguments. As we reflected upon our own experiences during oral arguments, we recalled the pandemic challenges we faced in accessing child care support, quiet space to present our arguments, or affordable transit to a quiet space to present. We seek to reduce student burden by offering funding to support any student who needs financial support to effectively advocate in their oral argument. Because of our mission to support equity for parent and caregiver students, we plan to prioritize students who have additional expenses due to their family responsibilities. However, we encourage any student with financial need to apply.
If you are a student in need of funding to offset childcare costs, travel to campus, or some other expense related to supporting your oral advocacy in the Charles Evans Hughes Competition, please complete this form by Wednesday, April 13, 2022. We will then respond to each student by Saturday, April 16, 2022, about whether and how much requested funding is available for their situation, and how we may distribute it.
Slavic Law Student Association (SLSA): The Slavic Law Student Association (SLSA) is a brand new student organization looking to finish building its executive board! Student Animal Legal Defense Fund: SALDF Presents: Illinois Courtroom Animal Advocate Program. Join us on Monday, April 11th at 3pm CT via Zoom as we discuss Courtroom Animal Advocate Program (CAAP) laws. CAAP laws allow advocates – supervised law students or volunteer lawyers – to advocate for animal victims in criminal cruelty cases. Join us and speaker Alicia Prygoski, an attorney from the Animal Legal Defense Fund, to learn more about CAAPs and Illinois specific legislation! ASP Session – "Writing Law School Exams": Please note the Exam Writing Workshop sponsored by ASP has a NEW date/time!
With finals fast approaching, join Prof. Young and Prof. Crist for a law school exam writing workshop on Wed., April 13, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in Room 590. Focusing on traditional essay exams and short answer questions, learn how to apply specific strategies for dissecting exam hypotheticals. Bonus: Learn about professors’ pet peeves and get insight from upper-class peers! This workshop is open to all students and will be conducted hybrid (in-person and remote). April – Ramadan |
On behalf of the Muslim Law Student Association, we would like to extend a warm Ramadan Mubarak to the Chicago-Kent community. Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, marks the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This year, Ramadan will run for the full month of April. Every day for 30 days, Muslims around the world will abstain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. This is a time of year dedicated to worship, spiritual reflection, and community. To our non-Muslim brothers and sisters: after just closing out a Diversity Month focused on solidarity on campus, we’re excited to carry that mission into the final month of the semester, and we’re grateful for and humbled from the showing of support from our peers thus far. Below we’ve answered some common questions Muslims frequently get during Ramadan, as well as heads-up for the coming month:
