The Danger Inside the House: Addressing the Threat of Domestic Violent Extremism l March 23, 2023

For the last few years, the threat of violent extremism primarily has originated from domestic actors, rather than from abroad. Although the U.S. government has developed highly successful investigatory and prosecutorial strategies to combat internationally-based violent extremism, the domestic threat poses additional challenges because of the constitutional protections afforded to U.S. citizens. This all-day, in-person, seminar explores the evolving domestic violent extremism (DVE) threat and identifies ways in which federal, state, and local governments can work with non-government organizations and the private sector to mitigate the threat. 44th Annual Kenneth M. Piper Lecture l March 28, 2023

Join us to hear Charlotte Garden, Julius E. Davis Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School, deliver this year’s Kenneth M. Piper Lecture. In this lecture, Professor Garden will address what strikes and other collective action might look like in a fissured or virtual workplace. As to both fissured and virtual workplaces, Professor Garden will consider what an “equal and opposite” reaction might look like – for example, a strike of an employer that mainly transacts business online might call for the deployment of a digital picket-line. Professor Garden will also discuss how the law might impede or support new forms of collection action that result from these changing business practices. This free lecture will be held in the Chicago-Kent College of Law Ogilvie Auditorium and is in-person only and will not be live-streamed.

Resources

Mental Health Tip of the Week: The Mental Health Committee of SBA wants to do our part to promote a culture of wellness at Chicago-Kent. To that end, we will be sharing tips for better mental health every week for the rest of the semester.

For our first tip, we want to encourage Chicago-Kent students to take advantage of the mental health resources the law school has to offer. You can find these resources at the links below. Please note that you do not need to participate in the student health insurance program to take advantage of these resources.

Spring 20223 Quick Guide: Please take a look at the Spring 2023 Quick Guide for important information as we begin a new semester.

Academic Calendar for 2022-2023: For your reference, the academic calendar for 2022-2023 is available by clicking here.

Quiet Study in Library: As our community returns to in-person study and instruction at the Conviser Law Center, the Law Library, in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, wants to remind students that the Law Library is a quiet study space. Talking is discouraged in open seating areas where, if necessary, conversations should be brief and very quiet. For group study and discussion, the Law Library offers ten study rooms students can reserve at the Service Desk on the 9th floor.

Exit Escort Service: In the evening hours, a Public Safety officer is available to provide a walking escort for those with concerns about their personal safety. This service applies to any location within a two block radius of the Conviser Law Center, including Union Station and many adjacent parking locations. Please see the officer(s) on duty at the front desk, or call the Public Safety number, 312-906-5030. Please also see the below survey!

Join Chicago-Kent’s Public Interest Center, the Child and Family Law Society, and Women in Law, on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at 3:00 PM in Room 520 for a Community Education Presentation covering:

  • an explanation of the nature and dynamics of domestic violence (“DV”);

  • focusing on the counter-intuitive or less-known aspects of DV, including the substantial barriers to safely leaving an abusive intimate partner;

  • a discussion of the kinds of services and resources that DV service organizations provide, including risk assessment and safety planning;

  • a description and explanation of the key laws in Illinois that DV survivors can use to address the various harms they have suffered and help them overcome the barriers to becoming safe—including the many forms of protection under an Illinois Order of Protection, housing protections under the Safe Homes Act and Eviction Act, employment protections under VESSA, the possibility of compensation for certain damages under the Crime Victims Compensation Act, and finally the protections in divorce and parentage cases relating to the allocation of parenting time and decision making, and restrictions on parenting time, to protect DV survivors and their children from further abuse.

A 2L student, Sylvie Durlacher, will give the Presentation. Sylvie is enrolled in Domestic Violence Law, Policy, & Community Engagement at UIC Law. She will be giving this presentation on Domestic Violence and legal protections for survivors in Illinois as her culminating project for the course. RSVP here!
