Chicago-Kent is honored to welcome United States Army Brigadier General Ronald Sullivan to campus. During this lunch and learn event Brigadier General Sullivan will speak about his legal career with United States Army. He will also speak to students about opportunities to practice law as Judge Advocates in the Army JAG Corps. Chicago Bar Association YLS Transactional Negotiation Competition – Call for teams:

The Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section is excited to announce its first annual Transactional Negotiation Competition! Sponsored by the YLS Business Transactional Law Committee, this competition will aim to provide law students with an opportunity to hone their legal skills outside of the classroom and courtroom and learn more about transactional law. The Danger Inside the House: Addressing the Threat of Domestic Violent Extremism l March 23, 2023

For the last few years, the threat of violent extremism primarily has originated from domestic actors, rather than from abroad. Although the U.S. government has developed highly successful investigatory and prosecutorial strategies to combat internationally-based violent extremism, the domestic threat poses additional challenges because of the constitutional protections afforded to U.S. citizens. This all-day, in-person, seminar explores the evolving domestic violent extremism (DVE) threat and identifies ways in which federal, state, and local governments can work with non-government organizations and the private sector to mitigate the threat. 44th Annual Kenneth M. Piper Lecture l March 28, 2023

Join us to hear Charlotte Garden, Julius E. Davis Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School, deliver this year’s Kenneth M. Piper Lecture. In this lecture, Professor Garden will address what strikes and other collective action might look like in a fissured or virtual workplace. As to both fissured and virtual workplaces, Professor Garden will consider what an “equal and opposite” reaction might look like – for example, a strike of an employer that mainly transacts business online might call for the deployment of a digital picket-line. Professor Garden will also discuss how the law might impede or support new forms of collection action that result from these changing business practices. This free lecture will be held in the Chicago-Kent College of Law Ogilvie Auditorium and is in-person only and will not be live-streamed.

Quiet Study in Library: As our community returns to in-person study and instruction at the Conviser Law Center, the Law Library, in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, wants to remind students that the Law Library is a quiet study space. Talking is discouraged in open seating areas where, if necessary, conversations should be brief and very quiet. For group study and discussion, the Law Library offers ten study rooms students can reserve at the Service Desk on the 9th floor.

Exit Escort Service: In the evening hours, a Public Safety officer is available to provide a walking escort for those with concerns about their personal safety. This service applies to any location within a two block radius of the Conviser Law Center, including Union Station and many adjacent parking locations. YOU have significant impact on determining the living expenses of your Cost of Attendance Budget (COA) which includes: Transportation, Food and Housing, and Personal/ Miscellaneous Expenses, etc. for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year; but ONLY if you take approximately 10 minutes to provide us with information specific to your program and individual cost of living expenses.

Remember: We cannot award financial aid that exceeds your total COA. We need your data so we can provide you with the most reasonable COA, as we use this data in conjunction with other sources to determine the average total of each COA budget item.

Public Interest Fellowship: On Wednesday, February 15 at 3pm in room 520, join us to learn about public interest fellowships! This program will feature Chicago-Kent alumni who are current and former Equal Justice Works and Skadden Fellows at: Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Legal Aid Chicago, Cabrini Green Legal Aid, and the Shriver Center on Poverty Law.

Current 2L law students who are planning to put together fellowship proposals should definitely attend, as we have a fellowship committee that can help you with your proposals this coming summer. If you are a 2L planning to draft a proposal and you cannot make this session, please email Michelle Vodenik (mvodenik).

First-year law students who are interested in public interest work should also attend to learn more about the process of creating a fellowship project.

Judicial Clerkships Panel: Clerking for a judge after graduation is an excellent way to build your legal skills and position yourself for a great career. This panel features Chicago-Kent graduates who are clerking for judges in both state and federal courts. The application processes for state and federal courts will be discussed.

Public Interest Fellowship: On Wednesday, February 15 at 3pm in room 520, join us to learn about public interest fellowships! This program will feature Chicago-Kent alumni who are current and former Equal Justice Works and Skadden Fellows at: Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Legal Aid Chicago, Cabrini Green Legal Aid, and the Shriver Center on Poverty Law.

Current 2L law students who are planning to put together fellowship proposals should definitely attend, as we have a fellowship committee that can help you with your proposals this coming summer. If you are a 2L planning to draft a proposal and you cannot make this session, please email Michelle Vodenik (mvodenik).

First-year law students who are interested in public interest work should also attend to learn more about the process of creating a fellowship project.

Chicago-Kent Alumni Awards Ceremony: Now in its 43rd year, the Chicago-Kent Alumni Awards Celebration honors alumni who have made significant contributions to the law school. This year’s ceremony will be hosted at the Conviser Law Center on March 9th. We are looking for student volunteers to help the day of the ceremony as well as some office support prior to. Judicial Externship Program: On Wednesday, February 8, at 3 p.m., via Zoom, Professor Gross will conduct an informational meeting for students interested in participating in the Summer and/or Fall 2023 Judicial Externship Program. Judicial Clerkships Panel: Clerking for a judge after graduation is an excellent way to build your legal skills and position yourself for a great career. This panel features Chicago-Kent graduates who are clerking for judges in both state and federal courts. The application processes for state and federal courts will be discussed.

Any student –1L, 2L, 3L or graduate–who is interested in a post-grad clerkship is strongly encouraged to attend.

The Danger Inside the House: Addressing the Threat of Domestic Violent Extremism l March 23, 2023

For the last few years, the threat of violent extremism primarily has originated from domestic actors, rather than from abroad. Although the U.S. government has developed highly successful investigatory and prosecutorial strategies to combat internationally-based violent extremism, the domestic threat poses additional challenges because of the constitutional protections afforded to U.S. citizens. This all-day, in-person, seminar explores the evolving domestic violent extremism (DVE) threat and identifies ways in which federal, state, and local governments can work with non-government organizations and the private sector to mitigate the threat. Quiet Study in Library: As our community returns to in-person study and instruction at the Conviser Law Center, the Law Library, in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, wants to remind students that the Law Library is a quiet study space. Talking is discouraged in open seating areas where, if necessary, conversations should be brief and very quiet. For group study and discussion, the Law Library offers ten study rooms students can reserve at the Service Desk on the 9th floor.

Exit Escort Service: In the evening hours, a Public Safety officer is available to provide a walking escort for those with concerns about their personal safety. This service applies to any location within a two block radius of the Conviser Law Center, including Union Station and many adjacent parking locations. Josh Herman defends complex federal cases including drug, gun, and material support for terrorism prosecutions. Josh has worked at the Cook County Public Defender, Durkin & Roberts LLP, and is now in solo practice. He recently presented at the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys about bias against Muslims in the US government’s terrorism investigations and prosecutions.

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Forum: This year’s event will take place on January 19, 2023 from 5:30pm to 7pm and is titled "The Pathway to Equity and Freedom: Dismantling Systems of Oppression through Public Health and Safety Reforms"

The annual Chicago-Kent MLK Jr. Forum was established in 2016 to raise awareness about social justice issues impacting various communities in Chicago and beyond, identify potential causes of those issues and solutions and end with a call to action.

The 2023 MLK Forum will raise awareness about the continued injustices impacting Black and Brown communities, as a result of racist systems and institutions that were designed to oppress them. Esteemed panelists will establish the need for health and safety reforms that will not only protect the constitutional rights of all Illinois residents, but will also create safer communities throughout the state.

Through a discussion about current and developing Illinois legislation and policies designed to meet these goals, our guests will present ways in which law students, lawyers and members of the community at large can get involved in the fight for equity and freedom.

TAs make a BIG difference by helping their peers through the following activities:

• TAs hold weekly office hours

• TAs run large review sessions open to all students in the class

• TAs run weekly small group sessions for selected students

Center for Research and Service (CRS): The Center for Research and Service (CRS) at IIT conducts the Student Voices Survey, a tool to collect data from students about their experiences at the university. We are seeking a student to represent Chicago-Kent to help craft the survey and analyze the results, ensuring that the survey/results are tailored to include concerns of our law students.

The Student Voices Survey is a student-led committee with oversight from CRS. The time commitment would likely be a few hours per month, varying based on building the survey initially and analyzing the results in the spring.

Quiet Study in Library: As our community returns to in-person study and instruction at the Conviser Law Center, the Law Library, in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, wants to remind students that the Law Library is a quiet study space. Talking is discouraged in open seating areas where, if necessary, conversations should be brief and very quiet. For group study and discussion, the Law Library offers ten study rooms students can reserve at the Service Desk on the 9th floor.

Exit Escort Service: In the evening hours, a Public Safety officer is available to provide a walking escort for those with concerns about their personal safety. This service applies to any location within a two block radius of the Conviser Law Center, including Union Station and many adjacent parking locations. Self-Help Resource Center: On Tuesday, November 15th at 12pm in Room C35, come learn about Chicago-Kent’s Self-Help Resource Center! It’s a unique and meaningful volunteer opportunity at the Daley Center where students can help pro se litigants while also becoming familiar with the court system and local legal resources. For years, the center has been an important resource for court visitors, but it has not been open full time since fall 2020, so we need you to help it relaunch! This volunteer opportunity is open to 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls! There are also leadership opportunities available. Co-sponsored by The Law Lab and the Public Interest Center. Light refreshments will be served.

Career Services Office 3L Survey: Hey 3L Class! We hope your last year of law school has gotten off to a great start. We know you have had an unconventional, chaotic time (to say the least) over the past two years and so we are reaching out to you to see how we at Career Services can best help you over your remaining semesters. Since each student has their own questions, paths, needs, etc., we have put together a quick Google Form Survey to help us figure out where and what the needs are, both individually and as a class.

The survey only takes a few minutes to fill out, but will be instrumental in helping us figure out what support you and your classmates are looking for. Center for Research and Service (CRS): The Center for Research and Service (CRS) at IIT conducts the Student Voices Survey, a tool to collect data from students about their experiences at the university. We are seeking a student to represent Chicago-Kent to help craft the survey and analyze the results, ensuring that the survey/results are tailored to include concerns of our law students.

The Student Voices Survey is a student-led committee with oversight from CRS. The time commitment would likely be a few hours per month, varying based on building the survey initially and analyzing the results in the spring.

Quiet Study in Library: As our community returns to in-person study and instruction at the Conviser Law Center, the Law Library, in conjunction with the Student Bar Association, wants to remind students that the Law Library is a quiet study space. Talking is discouraged in open seating areas where, if necessary, conversations should be brief and very quiet. For group study and discussion, the Law Library offers ten study rooms students can reserve at the Service Desk on the 9th floor.

Exit Escort Service: In the evening hours, a Public Safety officer is available to provide a walking escort for those with concerns about their personal safety. This service applies to any location within a two block radius of the Conviser Law Center, including Union Station and many adjacent parking locations. Environmental Law Society (ELS): November is National Native American Heritage Month and ELS will be hosting a documentary film viewing of Awake, A Dream From Standing Rock in the CK Auditorium at 3:30pm on Wednesday November 16th and we would love for you to join us! To kick-off the event, Prof. Smith-Drelich will share his expertise on Standing Rock litigation as the lead counsel for Thunderhawk v. County of Morton, which students have a chance to work on in his Constitutional Law Practicum.

Justinian Society of Italian Lawyers:

KJF Change Wars: It’s time for the next KJF fundraiser, also the last installment of the KJF Battle of the Sections! Next Week (11/14-11/18) we’ll be having Change Wars every day from 11:30-1:30 outside the Spak (Note: on Wednesday we will be on the 2nd floor).

Here’s how it will work:

• Each 1L section will have a container at the table.

• All paper money, checks, or donations made through Venmo will count toward that section’s total.

• All loose change will count against that section’s total.

• The section with the highest total at the end of the week will get 4 points toward the Battle of the Sections, second place will get 2 points, and last place will get 1 point.

  • Note: The Battle of the Sections is close (with Section C holding a narrow lead), and it’s still anyone’s game! Remember that the winning sedition will get free admission (with food and alcohol) to our End of Semester Bash!

So stop by and make a cash donation, or bring your loose change in and sabotage another section 🙂

All of the money raised next week will go directly toward our summer grants for students pursuing unpaid public interest work next summer.

Privacy Law Society: Do you have a right to privacy regarding your trash? What about your DNA? Do we have a right to privacy concerning what we post on social media? What about what we search for on the internet?

Public Policy Law Society: The Public Policy Law Society is a new organization at Kent that will provide a career pathway for those interested in public policy and an outlet to discuss policy issues that affect us as law students. The organization will also facilitate discussions with professionals in the field including politicians in Illinois and at the federal level, advocates for both private and nonprofit organizations, agency liaisons, etc. We hope to have our first meeting in the coming weeks so stay tuned for more information!

Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF): SALDF will be hosting a donation drive for PAWS Chicago from Monday, November 14th through Monday, December 5th. Tabletop Gaming Society: Tabletop Games is hosting two events next week! On Tuesday, November 15th, the Tabletop Gaming Society is hosting a Board Game Night in the Chicago Kent Games Room. Join us to play some board games, both old and new while taking a break from the stress of classes.

On Friday, November 18th, Tabletop Gaming Society is hosting our first Dungeons & Dragons session: Session Zero. Open to players of all levels, we will be learning the basics of the game and creating characters to play later. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has never played before since we will be teaching the basic mechanics and just having a ton of fun!

Thanksgiving Food Drive: Join the Cook County Bar Association, Lawyers in the Community Committee, MWBLSA, and local chapters as we collect donations for law students in need. CK Law Review: On November 11th & 12th, 2022, the Chicago-Kent Law Review will host the 4th International & Comparative Insolvency Symposium. Join symposium chairs Laura Coordes, Christoph Henkel, and Adrian Walters for a weekend exploring developments in insolvency and restructuring law with renowned legal experts from around the world at a time of considerable uncertainty in the global economy.
