Barristers’ Ball Survey! We are very excited to announce that the Barristers’ Ball is a GO this year! For those who do not know, the Barristers’ Ball is an annual event held at most law schools towards the end of the school year. The event is hosted by SBA as a school-wide formal affair- you might have heard it referred to as "Law School Prom." This year is very special, especially to all of the 3Ls, since this event has been canceled for the past two years. That being said, we want to make this year’s Barristers’ the biggest celebration it can be while ensuring it is as safe as possible for every student in attendance. We all deserve a special night to celebrate our accomplishments throughout this crazy covid law school experience we have all had. If you could take a minute and complete this survey so the Barristers’ Committee can plan as carefully as possible, I know we would all greatly appreciate it. Thanks and see you all at Barristers’!

Class of 2022 Composite Photo Sessions: THIS WEEK: November 3-4, 2021

You may have seen the dozens of past class composite photos hanging on the walls on the 3rd floor – now is your chance to be part of your class photo! Composite photo sittings for the Class of 2022 composite photo will take place next week. These sessions are free and take only a few minutes. In addition to being part of the composite photo, this is a great opportunity to have your professional headshots taken prior to graduation! Digital images of both your individual portrait and the composite photo will be provided free of charge, courtesy of the Alumni Association.

All photos will be taken in the Auditorium in the lobby level of the law school, with social distancing and safety protocols in place. Graduating students from the Class of 2022 may sign up for any available slot though this fall session is primarily reserved for Fall graduates; additional sessions will take place in the Spring semester. More information is available on the Composite Photo page.

Bar Exam Information Session: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15 from 5:00-6:00 PM in room 210

If you plan to take the July 2022 or Feb 2023 bar exam, I encourage you to attend this session. We will review the bar application and admission process as well as discuss your Character & Fitness application, the subjects tested on the bar exam, and what you need to do now to prepare for next year’s exam.

Sign up to attend here. (Signing up does not commit you to attending- it just allows me to get an idea of where you plan to sit for the bar and if you have questions.)

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact Erin Crist if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you on November 15th.

C-K Law Group – Spring Semester: Work under the supervision of an attorney to gain practical legal experience in addition to earning law school credit!! Fall Clothing Drive, now through 12/4/2021: Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK), The Chicago-Kent Racial Equity and Advocacy Alliance (REAA), and Women in Law (WIL)—in partnership with the Design Museum of Chicago—are pleased to sponsor a Fall Clothing and Toy Drive to benefit The Women’s Treatment Center (TWTC) in Chicago. TWTC served as the sole substance abuse treatment center in Illinois focused solely on women and specializing in treatment framed and informed by women’s issues. However, the pandemic forced TWTC to shutter its physical space, and many women were displaced. While TWTC has found new arrangements for many of the women and children it serves, these women and their children remain in need of clothing in general—and toys (!) for this upcoming holiday season. PACCK, REAA, and WIL ask you to open your hearts (and your closets!) and donate this fall to support these women and their families as they transition through recovery. The Design Museum will accept donations now through December 4, 2021. You may donate via drop-off, delivery, or mail, directly to:

Event & Description

11/1 – 11/2:

Day of the Dead

The practice and tradition of Day of the Dead pre-dates pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The Aztecs and several indigenous communities, in what is now known as modern day Mexico, take this period to honor the lives of those who have passed away. Traditionally, Day of the Dead begins on November 1st and ends on November 2nd. This practice is not a form of grieving but instead a celebration of the memories and stories of ancestors and our loved ones. In order to spark those memories, individuals either decorate the grave site or create an altar, called an ofrenda. Both options provide a space to showcase the personalities and values of those who have passed. Some altars have candles, marigolds or cempasuchiles; photos; a person’s favorite drink or food; and cherished items. Within the practice of Day of the Dead, it is believed that during this time the spirit world and earthly world come together to celebrate.

With that said, please join HLLSA, ILS, and ACPLS as we come together to create an ofrenda to celebrate our loved ones. All are welcome to participate. Navigating law school is in itself a challenging journey and surviving a pandemic is an added layer. So, be kind to yourselves and celebrate each other by joining us as we share stories and create a communal altar on October 25th in the concourse.

9/15-10/15: Hispanic Heritage Month

We are halfway through Hispanic Heritage Month, which comes to a close on October 15th. This month of celebration is one that acknowledges the contributions the Hispanic community has made throughout the country and those contributions that are yet to come. It is meant to celebrate not only the culture of the Hispanic people, but the influence this culture has on creating the United States we live and thrive in today.

With the time left to honor Hispanic heritage, HLLSA would like to take this opportunity to highlight the wide range of experiences and journeys that encompass Latinidad and the Hispanic identity. Since the recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month in 1968, this month has served as a platform to showcase the success of those who identify as Hispanic, Afro-Latino, Latiné,Latino/a/x. HLLSA not only invites you to celebrate the success of those like Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Dean Jennifer Rosato Perea, Environmental, Labor, and Civil Rights Activist Dolores Huerta; but invites you to reflect on how you as a future lawyer can honor and authentically support the experiences of those around you. Let us consider how we can celebrate, support, and appreciate the diverse community that makes up Chicago-Kent. ¡Juntos somos mejores!

The panel will feature DJ Ida, Executive Director of National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association; Ailin Chang, Program Coordinator of Midwest Asian Health Association, Jonas Ginsburg, Clinical Supervisor of Midwest Asian Health Association, and attorneys from McGuireWoods. Each member will speak about how they advocate for mental health, followed by a Q&A with the panelists, so please feel free to submit questions to APALSA regarding anything

Description

National Security Law Society: The National Security Law Society (“NSLS”) is inviting all students with an interest—or even curiosity—in the most consequential issues facing America today. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a non-partisan group that explores and raises awareness about the legal issues in vital sectors like data privacy, the international community, the military, space exploration, and the intelligence community, to name a few. The NSLS works closely with the Center for National Security and Human Rights, which puts on conferences that regularly attract some of the world’s preeminent national security practitioners and scholars. Additionally, we are a relatively new group on campus, so this is your chance to get in, make an impact, make connections, and set yourself apart from others.

The NSLS seeks to foster its members’ professional careers and leadership capabilities. We give our members intellectual and creative freedom, by encouraging members to research, and then write about a diverse range of national security issues. Students’ writings will be published on our blog, which demonstrates your abilities, interest, and knowledge to prospective employers. You will get to network with our counterparts in other law schools in the Chicago community. Additionally, you will have access to speakers, current, and retired members of the broader national security community, who are eager to assist our members’ personal and career growth.

Roman Law Society: The Roman Law Society’s focus is to develop a deeper understanding on the origins of our legal system, founded in Ancient Rome. Roman Law, along with the Roman system of government, was essential to the foundation of the United States Congress and the justice system used to this day. The Society’s purpose is to explore and share this knowledge about the ancient legal system outside of a classroom setting; to use the organization as a platform to learn from the past and understand what it can tell us about the present state of our legal system and where it may be heading. Overall, this society’s intent is to promote the principles of democratic society, a Republic governed by the will of the people. Those who are interested in joining the club or have question should reach out to either Daniel Gomez (dgomez11) or Jon Walz (jwalz).

Alternatively, our faculty-sponsored advisor, Alexandra Franco (afranco2) can also answer any questions that you may have.
