Date: Dec 02, 2015 Timing: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Speakers : Susan Sadlowski Garza Venue : 580
Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza, a leading voice in the new wave of progressive politicians in Chicago, is speaking at Chicago-Kent Wednesday in an event co-sponsored by ILS, NLG, ACS, HLLSA, and LELS
Alderwoman Garza will discuss her experiences as a community and labor activist on Chicago’s South Side, and how her experiences have shaped her political beliefs and activities.
Alderwoman Garza is a counselor at Jane Addams Elementary School, and serves as an Area Vice President for the Chicago Teachers’ Union. She is also the proud daughter of a former regional director of the United Steelworkers of America, a member of the Chicago Progressive Reform Caucus, and a life-long resident of the 10th Ward of Chicago.
We had five student organizations that teamed up to sponsor this event – Immigration Law Society at Chicago-Kent, American Constitution Society Chicago-Kent College of Law Student Chapter, National Lawyers Guild Chicago-Kent Chapter, HLLSA, and Chicago-Kent Labor and Employment Law Society!
Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza, 10th Ward defeated the incumbent in the last election by only 20 votes to become one of 13 new city council members – she is the first representative of the Chicago Teachers Union to be elected to this office and a leading voice of the new progressive movement in City Hall.
Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza, 10th Ward described her early experiences in City hall, including her interactions with Mayor Rahm Emanuel over his 2015 budget.
One early challenge included sorting out whether she could take a leave of absence from her role as a Chicago Public Schools counsellor at Jane Addams Elementary School, since she has set new precedents with her election.
We had a good mix of students, faculty and local residents attend the talk with Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza, 10th Ward
