On Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30pm in Morris Hall on the 10th floor for a free screening of The Judge, a documentary that provides rare insights into both Islamic law and gendered justice.
Film synopsis: "Religious courts in the Middle East had historically banned women from adjudicating domestic and family matters – in both the Shari’a courts of Islam and the Rabbinic courts of Judaism – until Kholoud Al-Faqih, dares to challenge that history. With the support of a progressive Sheik, Kholoud becomes the first woman judge with her appointment to a Palestinian Shari’a court in the West Bank, bringing a subtle new perspective garnered from her early about professional life working with battered women as an attorney in both the criminal and Shari’a courts."

IPLS
Ever wonder why today’s top musicians, including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande, routinely face copyright lawsuits? Or why the likes of Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Robin Thicke have recently been found liable for copyright infringement?
In this talk, Professor Edward Lee explains the copyright predicament musicians now face and the help the fair use doctrine may provide. Lee discusses his experimental study that showed fair use resulted in greater findings of no liability than a contestation of the test of substantial similarity.
Join IPLS on Tuesday, February 25, at noon in Room 510 to hear Professor Lee present his paper on Copyright Fair Use in music cases.
