2022 Class Bash: All Class of 2022 graduates (including Fall and Winter) are invited to join SBA on Saturday, April 30th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a graduation celebration in the C-K Lobby. There will be food, a special Class of 2022 gift*, a photo booth, and other graduation goodies for attendees! We encourage everyone to bring their regalia to take photos in.

All graduates are welcome to bring any guests/family to join the celebration, we just ask that you let us know by RSVPing here by next Wednesday, April 27th at 12:00 p.m. so we can plan accordingly.

ABA Writing Competition: The goal of the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law student writing contest is to encourage and reward law student writing on the subjects of real property or trust and estate law. It is designed to attract students to these law specialties, and to encourage scholarship and interest in these areas. Articles submitted for judging are encouraged to be of timely topics and have not been previously published. This contest is open to all J.D. and LL.M students currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.

• Award money of $1,000 – $2,500

Environmental Law Society (ELS):

Join Chicago-Kent Environmental Law Society (ELS) for our biggest fundraiser of the year on Thursday, April 28! We have secured a drink package at Ranalli’s Lincoln Park — $20 for two hours of beer, wine, and liquor — to network with your peers in the environmental and energy spaces while supporting a great cause. All proceeds from the event support the ELS Summer Fellowship, which we award to one or more students every summer who are participating in an unpaid or underpaid public interest position.

We will also be holding a raffle and silent auction. Your $20 ticket includes two raffle tickets, and additional tickets will be on sale throughout the night. We will also simultaneously have a silent auction, for which we are offering two sets of four Cubs tickets (to two different games) in the lower deck! Palmer Lecture: The 2021 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize has been awarded to Jens David Ohlin who is the Allan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law at Cornell Law School and a specialist in international law for his book Election Interference: International Law and the Future of Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2020). The annual prize honors exemplary works of scholarship exploring the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary American society.

ACLU and ACPLS Creative Writing Contest: On behalf of the ACLU of Chicago-Kent and the ACPLS, we invite you to participate in our annual creative writing contest. This year’s theme is justice. This could be in any sense of the word and does not have to be remotely law school-related. There are two categories for submissions, long and short pieces. ABA Writing Competition: The goal of the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law student writing contest is to encourage and reward law student writing on the subjects of real property or trust and estate law. It is designed to attract students to these law specialties, and to encourage scholarship and interest in these areas. Articles submitted for judging are encouraged to be of timely topics and have not been previously published. This contest is open to all J.D. and LL.M students currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.

Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK): Parents and Caregivers at Chicago-Kent (PACCK) seeks to assist our first year students by distributing our financial reserves to those who need additional financial assistance to effectively participate in oral arguments. As we reflected upon our own experiences during oral arguments, we recalled the pandemic challenges we faced in accessing child care support, quiet space to present our arguments, or affordable transit to a quiet space to present. We seek to reduce student burden by offering funding to support any student who needs financial support to effectively advocate in their oral argument. Because of our mission to support equity for parent and caregiver students, we plan to prioritize students who have additional expenses due to their family responsibilities. However, we encourage any student with financial need to apply.

If you are a student in need of funding to offset childcare costs, travel to campus, or some other expense related to supporting your oral advocacy in the Charles Evans Hughes Competition, please complete this form by Wednesday, April 13, 2022. We will then respond to each student by Saturday, April 16, 2022, about whether and how much requested funding is available for their situation, and how we may distribute it.

Tech Guide: Attached to this email is SBA’s Tech Guide. Please reference it for any technology-related problems you might encounter this semester.

Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship: Please consider applying for a 2022 Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Summer Fellowship if you have obtained a full-time, non-paying public-interest internship for this coming summer (for at least 8 weeks). The application, which is available on Symplicity at the Career Services Office, is due by 12 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022, and should be submitted electronically to Professor Marder (nmarder). Please note that you only need to submit an unofficial transcript, and it should be submitted electronically as part of your application. We anticipate awarding two fellowships ($8000 each) to provide living expenses to two students who are committed to public interest work and have found non-paying public interest positions for this summer.

Legal Externship Program: All Summer Legal Externship Program applications are due on or before Monday, May 2, 2022, and Summer Judicial Externship Program (if you secured your own) by Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Palmer Lecture: The 2021 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize has been awarded to Jens David Ohlin who is the Allan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law at Cornell Law School and a specialist in international law for his book Election Interference: International Law and the Future of Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2020). The annual prize honors exemplary works of scholarship exploring the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary American society.

LLM Program – Volunteering Help Needed: Our International LLM Program is looking for JD students to play "clients" to be interviewed by LLM students for a Client Interviewing assignment.

The Client Interviews will be held on Friday, April 1 at 11:30 am, via Zoom.

Total time expenditure will be approximately 45 minutes: (10 minutes to read a client fact scenario, 20 minutes to get interviewed by an LLM student acting as an attorney,15 minutes to debrief via Zoom directly after the interviews).Last semester, students earned 1 service credit for participating. We have applied for a similar service credit this semester.The opportunity is open to day and evening students from each year. ABA Writing Competition: The goal of the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law student writing contest is to encourage and reward law student writing on the subjects of real property or trust and estate law. It is designed to attract students to these law specialties, and to encourage scholarship and interest in these areas. Articles submitted for judging are encouraged to be of timely topics and have not been previously published. This contest is open to all J.D. and LL.M students currently attending an ABA-accredited law school.

SBA Elections!

Students: Are you interested in being a part of the Student Bar Association (SBA)? SBA is a great way to become involved at Chicago-Kent! Elections are coming up and all positions are open! Any full-time student is eligible to run for an SBA position. You do not have to already be in SBA to run for a position.

Positions up for election include: President, Vice President, Evening Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, American Bar Association Representative, Chicago Bar Association Representative, Illinois State Bar Association Representative, Cook County Bar Association Representative, 2L Class Representative (4 positions), 2L Evening Class Representative (2 positions), 3L Class Representative (4 positions), and 3L Evening Class Representative (2 positions).

Attached is a list of all positions and their descriptions. We highly encourage any interested students to reach out to current SBA members in positions you are interested in. A current list of our membership with positions is linked here.

• On Monday, March 7th, We will send out a google doc of the blank petitions. The file is not able to be edited. You must go to "File" and then "Make a Copy" to make it your own Google Doc.

• All signatures must be signed by individuals on their own computers and on their own gmail account. You must share links, not computers, for signatures.

• You can send these petitions through individual email and other electronic means, but not over email listservs.

• BCCing is not allowed when emailing.

• The number of signatures required for your petitions will be shared with you on Monday, March 7th.

• When submitting the petitions, you must include a candidate statement. (Sample is attached).

• The petition should be downloaded as a PDF, saved, and sent to the Election Chair, Emily Richter at erichter1.

• Petitions and Candidate Statements are due on March 21 at 5:00 pm CST.

No solicitation of petition signatures is allowed until the petitions are "released" on March 7th at 8:00 am. No campaigning for any position is allowed until campaigning opens on March 24 at 8:00 am.

Public lecture featuring the 2022 Centennial Visitor, Vince Warren will be held on March 23, 2022 at 3 pm at the Conviser Law Center.

Mr. Warren is the Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

He is a leading expert on racial injustice and discriminatory policing, and oversees the CCR’s litigation and advocacy work, using international and domestic law to challenge human rights abuses, including racial, gender and LGBTQIA injustice. Under his leadership, the Center for Constitutional Rights successfully challenged the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy and profiling of Muslims, ended long-term solitary confinement in California’s Pelican Bay Prison, and established the persecution of LGBTQIA people as a crime against humanity. The Center for Constitutional Rights is currently challenging the abuse of migrants at the U.S. Southern Border, the Muslim Ban, the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, and the criminalization of transgender people, as well as providing legal and policy support to Black, Brown, and Native organizers across the country.

“Careers and Opportunities Involving the Representation of Individuals with Disabilities.” is an

annual program organized by the ISBA’s Standing Committee for Disability Law. This year, the

program will be available virtually to law students.

Purpose: Raise law students’ awareness of the different types of opportunities and careers

available to attorneys who are interested in advocating for disabled individuals and/or disability

rights.

Format: A panel of attorneys will discuss different areas of practice in the public and private

sectors along with what each job generally entails. Attendees will be able to engage with

panelists and other law students interested in issues impacting the disabled.

Topics: Attendees will learn about practices that specialize in areas such as ADA law, special

education, public policy, legislative advocacy, mental health law, guardianship, trust and estates,

family law, and personal injury. The program will also discuss internships, volunteer

opportunities, networking, representing disabled clients, and issues frequently encountered by

SBA Elections!

Students: Are you interested in being a part of the Student Bar Association (SBA)? SBA is a great way to become involved at Chicago-Kent! Elections are coming up and all positions are open! Any full-time student is eligible to run for an SBA position. You do not have to already be in SBA to run for a position.

Positions up for election include: President, Vice President, Evening Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, American Bar Association Representative, Chicago Bar Association Representative, Illinois State Bar Association Representative, Cook County Bar Association Representative, 2L Class Representative (4 positions), 2L Evening Class Representative (2 positions), 3L Class Representative (4 positions), and 3L Evening Class Representative (2 positions).

Election Petition Information

• On Monday, March 7th, We will send out a google doc of the blank petitions. The file is not able to be edited. You must go to "File" and then "Make a Copy" to make it your own Google Doc.

• All signatures must be signed by individuals on their own computers and on their own gmail account. You must share links, not computers, for signatures.

• You can send these petitions through individual email and other electronic means, but not over email listservs.

• BCCing is not allowed when emailing.

• The number of signatures required for your petitions will be shared with you on Monday, March 7th.

• When submitting the petitions, you must include a candidate statement. (Sample is attached).

• The petition should be downloaded as a PDF, saved, and sent to the Election Chair, Emily Richter at erichter1.

• Petitions and Candidate Statements are due on March 21 at 5:00 pm CST.

No solicitation of petition signatures is allowed until the petitions are "released" on March 7th at 8:00 am. No campaigning for any position is allowed until campaigning opens on March 24 at 8:00 am.

Official rules regarding campaigning will be sent out on March 7th. Further, we are attaching our bylaws that govern elections for your consideration. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or jokes, please contact Emily Richter.

Public lecture featuring the 2022 Centennial Visitor, Vince Warren will be held on March 23, 2022 at 3 pm at the Conviser Law Center.

Mr. Warren is the Executive Director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

He is a leading expert on racial injustice and discriminatory policing, and oversees the CCR’s litigation and advocacy work, using international and domestic law to challenge human rights abuses, including racial, gender and LGBTQIA injustice. Under his leadership, the Center for Constitutional Rights successfully challenged the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy and profiling of Muslims, ended long-term solitary confinement in California’s Pelican Bay Prison, and established the persecution of LGBTQIA people as a crime against humanity. The Center for Constitutional Rights is currently challenging the abuse of migrants at the U.S. Southern Border, the Muslim Ban, the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, and the criminalization of transgender people, as well as providing legal and policy support to Black, Brown, and Native organizers across the country.

Election Petition Information

• On Monday, March 7th, We will send out a google doc of the blank petitions. The file is not able to be edited. You must go to "File" and then "Make a Copy" to make it your own Google Doc.

• All signatures must be signed by individuals on their own computers and on their own gmail account. You must share links, not computers, for signatures.

• You can send these petitions through individual email and other electronic means, but not over email listservs.

• BCCing is not allowed when emailing.

• The number of signatures required for your petitions will be shared with you on Monday, March 7th.

• When submitting the petitions, you must include a candidate statement. (Sample is attached).

• The petition should be downloaded as a PDF, saved, and sent to the Election Chair, Emily Richter at erichter1.

• Petitions and Candidate Statements are due on March 21 at 5:00 pm CST.

No solicitation of petition signatures is allowed until the petitions are "released" on March 7th at 8:00 am. No campaigning for any position is allowed until campaigning opens on March 24 at 8:00 am.

Legal Externship Program: Fall 2022 Judicial Externship Program Applications Now Available and due on March 11, 2022: The application packet for the Fall 2022 Judicial Externship Program is available on the sblaz on or before the end of day on Friday, March 11, 2022.

If you secured an externship independently of this program with a judge for Summer and/or Fall, please complete the short forms available on the externship website. Summer applications are due on or before Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Fall applications must be turned in no later than Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

Legal Tech Fictional Writing Competition

Science fiction story telling allows us to imagine possibilities outside of what exists today and re-imagine new possibilities in the law, legal access, and racial justice.

The ABA’s Young Lawyers Division and the Access to Justice Tech Fellows are hosting the Legal Tech Fictional Writing Competition for law students. The goal is to get law students to think critically about how technology will impact the future practice of law, and access to justice in a fun engaging way. The resulting stories will prompt conversations in the legal field about the upcoming changes in a new and creative way.

Roman Law Society: Friends, Romans, and Chicago-Kentians!

The Roman Law Society is pleased to announce the first annual Roman Law Gladiatorial Games! Students and Professors alike will partake in a variety of trivia games like Jeopardy, Pictionary, Wheel of Fortune, and Bingo, all based on Ancient Roman laws and customs, many of which we still use to this day. Winners in each event will get the chance to win gift cards, and an opportunity to win the ultimate prize: a $50 Amazon gift card, the title of “Honorary Citizen” in the Roman Law Society, and the Gladiatorial Games trophy!

The games will begin on Friday, March 11, at 5:00 pm. People can attend using this zoom link. To partake in the games, each person will contribute a minimum of $2 per person. All contributions will be sent to the International Rescue Committee giving aid those impacted by the war in Ukraine.

National Lawyers Guild: This week, Kent’s Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild is hosting a bake sale in conjunction with the NLG’s Week Against Mass Incarceration. The bake sale will take place on the 3rd floor in front of the Spak, on Monday Feb 28th from 3-4:30, and on Tuesday March 1 from 12-4pm.

This year’s Week Against Mass Incarceration is specifically themed around “Mass Incarceration and the Housing Crisis.” Our chapter will be highlighting two organizations doing exceptional work in the Chicagoland area. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. CCH believes housing is a human right, and works to prevent and end homelessness. Additionally we are highlighting the Chicago Community Bond Fund, which, through a revolving fund, supports individuals whose communities cannot afford to pay the bonds themselves and who have been impacted by structural violence. CCBF is hosting two upcoming volunteer orientation events on March 4th and 8th, and would love for law students to participate. Chicago-Kent Talent Show: The Chicago-Kent Talent Show – "Chicago Kent’s Got Talent" is coming up this April 15th in the Ogilvie Auditorium and we want YOU to audition! SBA is looking for potential acts to complete the attached google form and submit an audition video less than five minutes long to jspellman by Saturday, February 26th! Accepted acts will be notified via email the week leading up to March 6th. We are excited to promote your talent to the broader Chicago-Kent community, and as a plus there are some great prizes for the winners! Legal Externship Program: The Information and Application packets for the Summer and Fall 2022 Legal Externship Program ("LEP") will become available online and on Symplicity by February 25, 2022. Summer applications are due on or before Monday, May 2, 2022. Fall applications are due on or before Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

Informational Meeting: On Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at 3p.m., via Zoom,

Professor Gross will conduct an informational meeting for students interested in participating in the LEP programs. Former students will also be attending to share their experiences and answer any questions you might have.

ACLU of Illinois Networking Hour: On behalf of the Chicago-Kent American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Chapter, we hope you can join us on February 24th, 2022 from 12-1 p.m. CST for a virtual event in partnership with the ACLU Next Generation Society and the Northwestern School of Law ACLU Chapter. This event will bring together law students, Next Generation Society members, lawyers, and ACLU staff to discuss their career paths, current work, and involvement with the ACLU of Illinois and other public interest groups.

The event will feature a moderated panel discussion followed by breakout rooms for small group discussion and networking. In addition, the breakout rooms will focus on and include representatives from the following sectors: law firms, government, non-profits, and in-house counsel.

Legal Tech Fictional Writing Competition

Science fiction story telling allows us to imagine possibilities outside of what exists today and re-imagine new possibilities in the law, legal access, and racial justice.

The ABA’s Young Lawyers Division and the Access to Justice Tech Fellows are hosting the Legal Tech Fictional Writing Competition for law students. The goal is to get law students to think critically about how technology will impact the future practice of law, and access to justice in a fun engaging way. The resulting stories will prompt conversations in the legal field about the upcoming changes in a new and creative way.

Think you can write a compelling short story in 1,500 words or less? Enter the Legal Tech Fictional Writing Competition for your chance to win $1,000 in cash, and get published in the American Bar Association magazine. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, March 1st, 2022

Art and Cultural Property Law Society: Navigating a Career in Art Law. On March 4th at noon, the Art and Cultural Property Law Society will hear from Coco Soodek, a Chicago-based lawyer who has assisted large and small clients in art law and business matters for over twenty years. She will explain her path into art law, how she grew her career, and what steps students can take to enter the field. The event will be Zoom only; please find the link on the SBA calendar.

Black Law Students Association (BLSA):

Black Legal Scholars on IG (@ckblsa): Throughout Black History Month, every Wednesday and Friday, Chicago-Kent’s BLSA chapter will honor a Black legal scholar advancing the rule of law and making strides on behalf of Black Americans in their day-to-day work.

Young, Gifted, & Black Alumni Panel: On Monday, February 21st, 2022, at 6 p.m. CST via Zoom here, please join BLSA and the Career Services Office (CSO) for an alumni panel discussion featuring past presidents of BLSA for career advice and other thoughts about navigating law school and the legal profession. The panel discussion will be moderated by Michael Wilder and the panelists include alumni BLSA members Ashley Davidson, Jewell Ewing, Micah McClendon, and Bryant Roby.

Ida Platt Forum:In honor of Black History Month, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at the Chicago-Kent College of Law is proud to announce a new program entitled the “Ida Platt Forum” in celebration of the first African-American woman to be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois. The event will focus on race, advancing the rule of law, and feature trailblazing Black women making strides within the legal profession.

In the first iteration of the program, we have invited the Honorable Ann Claire Williams (Ret.), one of only two people of color to ever serve on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The panel will be moderated by Associate Professor of Law Kimberly Bailey, another phenomenal Black woman in her own right. Topics of discussion will include being working moms as Black women, navigating the complexities of the law, their commitment to public service and civic engagement, advice to law students/young lawyers, and her path to the federal bench. My Black Is Beautiful 2: Save The Date for Monday, February 28th, 2022 in the evening. To close out Black History Month, BLSA is excited to announce the return of My Black Is Beautiful 2 for the fourth year! This event will celebrate Black art and culture in its various forms. Attendees will have the chance to enjoy singers, poets, rappers; view Black artwork; and shop with Black vendors. More details to follow in the coming weeks!

Society of Women in Law (WIL): General Body Meeting – On Tuesday, February 22, at 1:00 PM, the Society of Women in Law will host its Spring 2022 General Body Meeting. The Executive Board will introduce themselves, share plans for this semester, and lead a fun "speed dating" activity for members to get to know one another better. This event will be hosted on campus in Room C50, and on Zoom via this wil with any questions you might have.
