Fall 2021 Quick Guide: Please take a look at the Fall 2021 Quick Guide for important information as we begin a new school year.

Books for 1Ls: All required first-year books and materials for entering students may be purchased at the Chicago-Kent bookstore. You may order your books online at Chicago-Kent Bookstore or in person. The bookstore is located on the 3rd level of the law school and can be reached at (312) 906-5605. Please note, the Chicago-Kent Bookstore currently requires anyone who enters the bookstore to wear a mask.

COVID-19 Policies & Procedure: Please find Chicago-Kent’s current COVID-19 protocols here.

Add/Drop Period: The add/drop period for Fall 2021 ends on Wednesday, September 8, at 9:00pm. You may add an open course without special permission until the end of the first week of classes. During the second week, however, you may add an open course only with permission of the instructor. You may not add a course after Tuesday, September 8, at 9:00pm.

Chicago-Kent Peer Advisor Program: Each year, entering students tell us that much of their most informative and valuable information comes from other students. As someone who has been there, your advice can be critical to the success of our incoming class. As a Peer Advisor, you will be paired with one or two first-year students to provide one-on-one advice and guidance about adjusting to the law school experience.

Student Organizations

Student Organization Fair: SAVE THE DATE for the 2021-2022 Student Organization Fair, which will take place on Tuesday, August 31st at 12:00 PM (daytime students) and 5:00 PM (evening students). This is a great opportunity for 1Ls & returning students to explore the different student organizations at Chicago-Kent!

BLSA & HLLSA Welcome Back Mixer: Please join the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) & the Hispanic Latinx Law Student Association (HLLSA) for a Welcome Back Mixer at Howl at the Moon located at 26 West Hubbard Street Chicago, Illinois 60654 on Friday, August 27th from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. CDT. All Chicago-Kent 1Ls and returning students are welcome to attend. Please see the attached flyer for more information, and remember to bring a mask & an ID.

Several Chicago-Kent student organizations sponsor teams to attend moot court competitions, and several professors coordinate sending teams to subject-specific competitions. National Security Law Society: The National Security Law Society (“NSLS”) is inviting all students with an interest—or even curiosity—in the most consequential issues facing America today. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a non-partisan group that explores and raises awareness about the legal issues in vital sectors like data privacy, the international community, the military, space exploration, and the intelligence community, to name a few. The NSLS works closely with the Center for National Security and Human Rights, which puts on conferences that regularly attract some of the world’s preeminent national security practitioners and scholars. Additionally, we are a relatively new group on campus, so this is your chance to get in, make an impact, make connections, and set yourself apart from others.

The NSLS seeks to foster its members’ professional careers and leadership capabilities. We give our members intellectual and creative freedom, by encouraging members to research, and then write about a diverse range of national security issues. Students’ writings will be published on our blog, which demonstrates your abilities, interest, and knowledge to prospective employers. You will get to network with our counterparts in other law schools in the Chicago community. Additionally, you will have access to speakers, current, and retired members of the broader national security community, who are eager to assist our members’ personal and career growth.

Future Deadlines

AUGUST 31st: Don’t forget, the first annual Racial Justice Writing Competition deadline is August 31st by midnight. Papers written by Chicago-Kent students, inside or outside of class, on any topic related to racial justice may be submitted for consideration. Rules and submission details are HERE. Also, we are holding a naming contest for the competition! If you have a good idea for a name, submit it HERE. The naming contest prize is $100, and the prize for the best paper submission is $1,000.

SEPTEMBER 1st: If you carry your own personal health insurance and would like to opt out of the school’s required health insurance, you must complete this waiver before September 1st.

SEPTEMBER 4th: All full-time J.D. students are enrolled in the U-Pass program. Your current Ventra U-Pass card will be activated to work from Monday, August 23 (the first day of regular classes) through Friday, December 20 (the last day of exams). The mandatory fee of $145 for the Fall semester will be billed to your student account. Students may choose to OPT OUT of the UPASS program for the semester by completing the Fall 2021 opt-out form by September 4th.. The form must be completed by this deadline to ensure your student account will not be billed the UPass fee.

SEPTEMBER 8th: Add/drop period ends.

COVID-19 Vaccine & Mask Protocol: Per Dean Krug’s July 22nd Announcement:

• If you are not yet vaccinated, please take steps as soon as possible to ensure that you have received your first shot no later than August 15 (or, if one of the limited exceptions applies to you, that you have submitted the required documentation and are prepared for regular COVID-19 testing, as specified by the university). Regardless of vaccination status, you must continue to wear a mask in the building.

• If you are already fully vaccinated, or at such time as you become fully vaccinated, please submit your proof of vaccination here (faculty and staff) or here (students).

If you are interested in Intellectual Property and/or gaining Bluebook editing experience, this is an incredible opportunity for you to get hands-on experience and training. C-K Law Group – Fall Semester: Work under the supervision of an attorney to gain legal experience in addition to earning law school credit!! Applications for the fall semester are now available: https://www.kentlaw.iit.edu/academics/jd-program/practical-skills-training/legal-clinics/legal-clinic-application

The Chicago-Kent Law Review will be hosting FIVE LIVE Zoom sessions for interested and eligible students to learn more about the function and benefits of joining Law Review. During these sessions, we will cover Bluebook basics as well as how to approach the summer write-on process. All sessions will be held via Zoom and you do not need to attend more than one session. Please see the attached flyer for the meeting links.

• As a reminder, the following students will automatically be invited to join the Chicago-Kent Law Review based on their academic performance:

  • Full-time day division students who have completed their first year and rank in the top 7% of the full-time day division class

  • Evening division and part-time day division students who have completed their first year and rank in the top 7% of the combined evening division and part-time day division class

  • Evening division and part-time day division students who have completed their second year and rank within the top 7% of the combined class of first-year day students and second-year evening and part-time day students

  • An additional method for joining Law Review is through participation in the Summer Candidacy Program. Because the Law Review is no longer requiring applicants to meet a minimum cumulative GPA, the Summer Candidacy Program will begin before Spring 2021 grades are released. This is a change from past years. This means that first-year rankings will not be available prior to the start of the write-on process. For this reason, everyone is encouraged to participate in the Summer Candidacy Program regardless of the potential to fall within the top 7%.

• Northwestern Law started a sublease spreadsheet for people looking to lease their apartment over the summer. The spreadsheet is being shared with all the Chicago area law schools. ASP: We are in the process of recruiting Academic Skills Program Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the Summer 2021 term. TAs are selected from among CK’s top students based on their overall performance in law school and in particular courses. TAs make a big difference by helping their peers through the following activities:

• TAs hold weekly office hours

• TAs run large review sessions open to all students in the class

• TAs run weekly small group sessions for selected students

Interested? Apply online by April 30 (click on link below). Also, please approach the professor you would like to work with and inform him/her of your interest.

We are looking for Summer TAs for the following courses:

• Criminal Law – Dean Sowle (first years can apply to be Dean Sowle’s TA)

• Evidence – Prof. Kling

We are in the process of recruiting Academic Skills Program Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the Summer 2021 term. TAs are selected from among CK’s top students based on their overall performance in law school and in particular courses. TAs make a big difference by helping their peers through the following activities:

• TAs hold weekly office hours

• TAs run large review sessions open to all students in the class

• TAs run weekly small group sessions for selected students

The Chicago-Kent Law Review will be hosting FIVE LIVE Zoom sessions for interested and eligible students to learn more about the function and benefits of joining Law Review. During these sessions, we will cover Bluebook basics as well as how to approach the summer write-on process. All sessions will be held via Zoom and you do not need to attend more than one session. • As a reminder, the following students will automatically be invited to join the Chicago-Kent Law Review based on their academic performance:

  • Full-time day division students who have completed their first year and rank in the top 7% of the full-time day division class

  • Evening division and part-time day division students who have completed their first year and rank in the top 7% of the combined evening division and part-time day division class

  • Evening division and part-time day division students who have completed their second year and rank within the top 7% of the combined class of first-year day students and second-year evening and part-time day students

  • An additional method for joining Law Review is through participation in the Summer Candidacy Program. Because the Law Review is no longer requiring applicants to meet a minimum cumulative GPA, the Summer Candidacy Program will begin before Spring 2021 grades are released. This is a change from past years. This means that first-year rankings will not be available prior to the start of the write-on process. For this reason, everyone is encouraged to participate in the Summer Candidacy Program regardless of the potential to fall within the top 7%.

Brittany graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2019 and while there, Brittany worked on criminal justice reform issues, including clemency and reducing barriers for justice-involved people through community law. Law Student Volunteers Needed! The Annual Illinois Youth Summit for high school students will take place on May 14, 2021. This year, the summit topic will be “What does defund the police really mean?” If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Dee Runaas at drunaas.

The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) has informed us that they are seeking 2 volunteers for the Immigrant Legal Defense Project. They are asking for 2-3 hours a week from May 24 through July 30. The volunteer would be paired with a fellow on NIJC’s Immigrant Legal Defense Project. The work would be remote via an internet platform. Please contact Elena Miller if you are interested in this opportunity.

Midwest Immigration Bond Fund Coalition Ambassador Training April 22 from 5:30 – 6:30 CT: The Midwest Immigration Bond Fund Coalition (MIBFC) endeavors to fill a critical gap by establishing a revolving fund that can be used to post a monetary bond for individuals held in the custody of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) who cannot afford to pay bonds set by ICE or the Chicago Immigration Court. The MIBFC also seeks to provide comprehensive post-release support to individuals facing deportation by strengthening and building relationships with community partners to provide assistance to impacted individuals in the areas of legal representation, justice, safety, and well-being in the United States. Interested students and advocates are invited to join a MIBFC Ambassador training on April 22 from 5:30 – 6:30 CT. to find out more about ICE detention and how to support the MIBFC mission. • 2 p.m.: The Color Run is a 1 mile run or walk through IIT Mies Campus to celebrate the end of the school year and the beginning of spring. Throughout the course colors will be thrown into the air and when you finish you will likely look like a rainbow! Unfortunately we cannot host a festival after the run like in years past. • 6:00 – 7:15: Unpacking Iqbal. Ashcroft v. Iqbal is known as the seminal case that every 1L agonizes over because it transformed the pleading standard starting in 2008. But this case goes beyond pleading standards. It is intertwined with questions surrounding qualified immunity, Xenophobia, Islamophobia and carries a holding that eerily resembles a rationale for blatant racism and discrimination. We have invited panel speakers Professor Alexander Reinert (who argued the case in front of the Supreme Court) and Professor Shirin Sinnar to discuss the impact that Iqbal has had on the entire American litigation system for ethnic and racial minorities.

• 3:00 p.m.: Women in Law and Immigration Law Society: Pads 4 Refugees Information Session. Join ILS & WIL for a presentation from Pads 4 Refugees, a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to support the dignity of women and girls in refugee camps by providing them with period products. Most governments and international bodies do not provide regular, consistent aid in the form of period products. These women are then placed in the position of having to use unsanitary items like leaves, moss, or old rags every month to manage their period. Without proper hygiene products, young women are also unable to attend school when they are on their period. Pads 4 Refugees was started to fill the gaps in period care. It works with partners on the ground in Greece to deliver the pads.

• 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The 30th Annual KJF Spring Auction: Calling all students: Are you a public interest student planning on getting an unpaid internship this coming summer? Or a student with a paid internship who’s looking to give back to the C-K community? The annual Kent Justice Foundation’s Spring Auction (when students can bid on Themis and Barbri Giftcards, virtual murder mystery, Zoom happy hour, and much more with your favorite professors!) is coming up on Friday, April 23rd.

  • The 30th Annual Auction will take place in the auditorium at Chicago-Kent on Friday, April 23rd from 6-8 PM CST. This will be an in-person event so social distancing and masks are required. But we are excited to see each and every one of you in person! There will be a silent and live auction taking place. If you would like to attend, the tickets are $7. You can purchase tickets at the door or online. Once the link is live, we will send you all a second email containing the link to purchase tickets.

  • Also, if you would like to volunteer for a committee either setting up the event, tearing down the event, or the wrap up committee, please provide your name here. The Wrap-Up committee begins working after the auction and involves emailing donors and winners. The Chicago-Kent Faculty are pleased to announce the inaugural year of the 2020-21 FIRST ANNUAL Racial Justice Writing Competition. As pledged in our 2020 Faculty Antiracism Statement, the Chicago-Kent faculty presents the inaugural year of this writing competition meant to encourage and honor excellent student scholarship on racial justice.

• Papers on any topic related to racial justice may be submitted for consideration.

• Any current Chicago-Kent student may submit a paper written inside or outside of class on a racial justice topic. Entries must be the author’s own work, and not part of a group project. Papers should explain the issue or thesis well; be well-organized, creative and persuasive; and be well written. There is no page limit for entries.

• The winning entry will receive a $1,000 cash prize. In addition, the winning submission will be published on the Chicago-Kent Diversity webpage.

• The judging will be conducted by a panel of Chicago-Kent faculty, including the chairs of the Curriculum and Diversity Committees and the additional rotating faculty judges recruited annually. Entries will be anonymous to judges during judging.

• Please email your submission to Nicole Mszal, Faculty Scholarship Academic Assistant, at nwagner2. Submissions will be accepted until midnight, June 1, 2021. Judging will be complete and the award announced by July 1, 2021.

• Naming Prize: We are also offering a $100 cash prize for the best name idea for this new writing competition. Stay tuned for the link to submit your name suggestions! The winner of the naming contest will also be announced on July 1, 2021.

Now accepting submissions for the Mary Rose Strubbe Labor and Employment Writing Competition. Papers on any topic relating to the law governing the workplace, such as employment law, labor law, employee benefits, or employment discrimination are eligible for the prize. Papers written for Chicago-Kent courses, academic-related internships/externships, or self-conducted research are admissible. The award money will be a check of $5,000.00,

awarded to one individual. In addition to the monetary award, the paper will be published

on the Chicago-Kent Institute for Law and the Workplace website and shared with prize donors.

Submissions are due May 14, 2021. See the attached flyer for more information.

The Black Law Students Association and the Student Bar Association are pleased to announce the Nickolas Johnson Writing Competition. In 2018, we lost a fellow classmate and BLSA member. This writing prize in Nickolas Johnson’s memory is to encourage students to tackle issues of mental health on campus and propose an idea to be implemented by BLSA and SBA for the upcoming school year. Click here for the application. Students can download the application by clicking on the documents in the guide, or find it attached to this newsletter.. The competition funding is donation based, and if you would like to donate, there is information provided below on how to do so. The hope is to raise $1,000 each year, which will allow the student who wins to be awarded $500, with the other $500 going to implementing the student’s proposal. The writing prize will take place from March 1 to April 19. A panel of judges will read the proposals from April 19 to May 10 and announce the winner on the May 10.

Fall 2021 Legal Externship Program Opportunity – For Credit Only (4 Credits) – Seyfarth Shaw, LLP. For 2L & 3L applicants:

• As part of Chicago-Kent’s Fall 2021 Legal Externship Program, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, will select a Chicago-Kent student extern. The extern essentially becomes a member of the firm’s IP group for a semester, performing legal research and writing in copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, advertising, privacy, Internet, and other related IP issues. The position is not limited to people with technical backgrounds.

• The selected extern will receive 4 (Pass/Fail) credit hours and must devote 16 hours a week to fieldwork, which will be performed primarily, if not completely, remotely depending on the circumstances. There will also be an accompanying non-graded classroom component on designated Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. This is a great externship opportunity!

• As part of Chicago-Kent’s Fall 2021 Legal Externship Program, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, will select a Chicago-Kent student extern. The extern essentially becomes a member of the firm’s IP group for a semester, performing legal research and writing in copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, advertising, privacy, Internet, and other related IP issues. The position is not limited to people with technical backgrounds.

• The selected extern will receive 4 (Pass/Fail) credit hours and must devote 16 hours a week to fieldwork, which will be performed primarily, if not completely, remotely depending on the circumstances. There will also be an accompanying non-graded classroom component on designated Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. This is a great externship opportunity!

• To Apply: Prospective 2Ls and 3Ls must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.2. Interested in submitting a paper to a competition? The law library has created a guide to student legal writing competitions. For more information, please see the library blog post about the guide.

The Black Law Students Association and the Student Bar Association are pleased to announce the Nickolas Johnson Writing Competition. In 2018, we lost a fellow classmate and BLSA member. This writing prize in Nickolas Johnson’s memory is to encourage students to tackle issues of mental health on campus and propose an idea to be implemented by BLSA and SBA for the upcoming school year. Click here for the application. Students can download the application by clicking on the documents in the guide, or find it attached to this newsletter.. The competition funding is donation based, and if you would like to donate, there is information provided below on how to do so. The hope is to raise $1,000 each year, which will allow the student who wins to be awarded $500, with the other $500 going to implementing the student’s proposal. The writing prize will take place from March 1 to April 19. A panel of judges will read the proposals from April 19 to May 10 and announce the winner on the May 10.

Announcements

Graduation Regalia – We know that due to the pandemic graduation looks a little different this year. The SBA wanted to make sure that the cost of regalia was low so that graduates felt like they were able to still participate – no matter how they choose to celebrate! We heavily subsidized the gown and hood, so that the total fee (including tax) is $15.20. Additionally, the school is offering the graduation tam and tassel at no cost. We hope that this lessened cost will allow graduates the opportunity to celebrate and take pictures with loved ones in their regalia! Please be sure to order your regalia by April 16 or else it may not arrive by the virtual graduation ceremony. Congratulations to Emily Barney on her promotion to Digital Education & Internal Resources Librarian. Emily has been instrumental in Chicago-Kent’s successful move to our remote/hybrid environment. She has been critical to the online hosting of Chicago-Kent’s many online events, including her work during Diversity Week, and her work with student organizations.

SA Foxx is the first African American woman to lead the CCSAO – the second largest prosecutor’s office in the country. Prior to being elected State’s Attorney, she served as Chief of Staff to the Cook County Board President where she was the lead architect of the county’s criminal justice reform agenda to address racial disparities in the criminal and juvenile justice systems. Attendees will hear about SA Foxx’s journey through the law, receive an overview of the functions of the CCSAO, and have a chance to ask questions to State’s Attorney Foxx. Please join us for this virtual event, where we will come together to celebrate and support the ongoing work to defend civil rights and civil liberties and hear directly from keynote speaker Stacey Abrams on the role that each of us can play in the movement to increase access to the ballot. • The ACLU and ACPLS are hosting a creative writing contest, and we want to let you know the contest deadline is quickly approaching! We’ve received just a couple of submissions, so your chances to take first place are still good! Of the submissions we received, a few have agreed to have their pieces displayed to the student body. To see the submissions we made available, check out the link: aclu. Also, please let us know if you’re open to having your piece on display before voting is complete. The winning submission will receive $100 and will choose an organization to receive a separate $100 donation. The runner-up will also receive $80. The deadline for submissions is March 17!
