Ascend Justice Winter Immersion Program 2020-2021: Experience an immersive introduction to domestic violence litigation by spending one or more weeks helping self-represented litigants petition the court for order of protection through Ascend Justice’s Emergency Protection Project. Three one-week sessions are available over the Winter Break. This experience is currently Remote. Please see attached for more information on this program. *This opportunity is normally held in-person at the Domestic Violence Courthouse on Harrison, only 3 blocks from Chicago-Kent. Once you are trained to volunteer, this can be an on-going volunteer opportunity for you.

Seeking Applications for the HNBA Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition:

HLLSA is looking for 2L, 3L, and 4L students interested in participating in the Hispanic National Bar Association’s 26th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition. The competition brings together 32 teams of law students from the nation’s top law schools to argue a case currently before the United States Supreme Court. The 2021 competition will take place virtually on March 9-12, 2021 (note: this will occur during dates scheduled for regular class sessions).

• Each school may send one team of up to three students. The application process is open to any student in their second year of law school and above, regardless of their involvement in HLLSA. The moot court team is selected by a committee of HLLSA board members and Moot Court Honor Society board members. If you are interested please submit the following materials directly to hllsa:

  • A legal writing sample (PDF format, full appellate brief from Legal Writing II preferred, but all submissions welcome)

  • Your resume (not necessary to list GPA)

  • A brief statement on why you are interested in competing in a moot court competition, which includes whether you are able to work on the brief over winter break

• The selection committee intends on following this timeline:

  • Applications open: November 2nd

  • Deadline to submit application materials: Monday November 30th at 11:59pm

  • Selected applicants will be notified by December 7th

  • Register the selected team for through the HNBA website (week of December 7th)

  • The competition is March 9-12th. The competition will take place virtually.

Join HLLSA members Mariah and Stephanie every Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM for a completely virtual yoga class to jumpstart your day! Just go to our HLLSA Instagram Page where one of our all-star instructors will share the class on IG Live. The class will also be posted to our page for 24 hours. There is a suggested $5 donation (Venmo: @Mariah-Mata) which will go towards the HLLSA Moot Court Competition and Judge’s Night.

Federal Work Study Information Session: Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 12:00 pm via Zoom. Interested in receiving payment for working at government and public interest organizations? Federal Work Study (FWS) is a need-based financial aid program established by the federal government. The FWS program provides employment opportunities for eligible students, allowing them to earn, rather than borrow, a portion of their educational costs. Attend this information session held by Senior Director of Career Services and administrator of the FWS program, Michelle Vodenik to learn more about FWS.

Pathway to Summer: Preparing for 1L Summer Diversity Opportunities – Join APALSA and CLS for a student panel on November 24, 2020 at 12:00pm. Panelists will discuss preparation, timeline, and applications for 1L summer internship opportunities. Diversity programs such as JIOP and ACC will be the focus of this event, but there will be information applicable to all summer opportunities. Come join! Zoom link is here.

2020 Palmer Prize Lecture. In this lecture, Henry Farrell and Abraham L. Newman, winners of the 2019 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize, will present the ideas in their award-winning book Of Privacy and Power–The Transatlantic Struggle over Freedom and Security (Princeton University Press 2019). The annual $10,000 Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize was established in 2007 by Roy C. Palmer ’62 and Susan Palmer to encourage and reward public debate among scholars on current issues affecting the rights of individuals and the responsibilities of governments throughout the world. The goal of the event is to provide 1L students with an opportunity to discuss the stresses of law school and hear about study strategies, personal organization tips, and mental health practices that helped older students succeed in law school. A Fireside Chat with Attorney General Kwame Raoul: The SBA Career Committee is pleased and excited to host Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul for a fireside chat on Monday, November 16 at 5:30 pm via Zoom. Attorney General Raoul is a member of Kent’s 125 Alumni of Distinction; prior to his election as Attorney General, he served in the Illinois State Senate and was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Chicago-Kent Law Review Symposium: Please join the Chicago-Kent Law Review and Professor Barbara Pfeffer Billauer for our virtual Symposium, Embryonic Injuries and Nascent Remedies in the Age of CRISPR-Cas and Advanced IVF, scheduled for November 18, 2020 –November 19, 2020 at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. The Symposium will focus on the legal, medical, and bioethical impacts surrounding novel and cutting-edge techniques in human genetic manipulation, including gene-editing, IVF, and preimplantation testing. The Symposium features panelists from both the legal and medical communities who are some of the leading experts in the field. C-K Equity Talks: The Multifaceted Racial Inequities Impacting Education: Racial Inequities Impacting Education are multifaceted. Panelists will discuss systemic barriers that exist both inside and outside of the education system that contribute to the achievement gap between white students and students of color. Some of the barriers include economic and school funding disparities, court decisions, social and emotional factors, disparate discipline, voting rights, mass incarceration, and implicit bias.

The Black Law Students Association Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition has opened up its registration! The Regional CBMMTC consists of a maximum of 18 teams. Rounds simulate a civil trial proceeding where each team, consisting of four members each, offers opening statements, direct and cross examination of witnesses, and closing arguments. The top three placing teams from the regional convention will be invited to compete at the National Convention Advocacy Competition. Witnesses are not scored in the competition. Advocates are evaluated on their overall courtroom presence, command of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, teamwork, and accuracy of objections. Each trial lasts approximately two and one-half hours.

• The Regional Competition will take place virtually on February 3-6, 2021.The top three placing teams from each of the six regional conventions will be invited to compete at the National Convention on March 3-7, 2021.

• If anyone is interested in participating or has any questions about this competition, please email Micah McClendon as soon as possible.

KJF Justice Walk: In lieu of our Annual Wine Night, Kent Justice Foundation will be hosting the First Annual "Justice Walk" on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Lincoln Montrose Running Track (4400 N Lakeshore Drive). If you’re interested in participating on BLSA’s Moot Court team, then you’re in luck! The Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition has opened up their registration! The regional competition will take place virtually from February 3-6th. The Regional competitions consist of a maximum of 18 teams made up of two advocates per team. Teams will write briefs arguing on behalf of the petitioner and respondent. Regional competitions will simulate an appellate oral argument proceeding. For each round, oral arguments for each side will consist of no more than 30 minutes, including rebuttal. Competitors are evaluated on their overall ability as an appellate advocate. After each side articulates their argument, the judges score each competitor using the official TMMCC rubric. Overall, each round lasts no more than 1.5 hours from. The top three placing teams from each of the six regional conventions will be invited to compete at the National Convention, March 3-7th, 2021. The Black Law Students Association Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition has opened up its registration! The Regional CBMMTC consists of a maximum of 18 teams. Rounds simulate a civil trial proceeding where each team, consisting of four members each, offers opening statements, direct and cross examination of witnesses, and closing arguments. The top three placing teams from the regional convention will be invited to compete at the National Convention Advocacy Competition. Witnesses are not scored in the competition. Advocates are evaluated on their overall courtroom presence, command of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, teamwork, and accuracy of objections. Each trial lasts approximately two and one-half hours.

• The Regional Competition will take place virtually on February 3-6, 2021.The top three placing teams from each of the six regional conventions will be invited to compete at the National Convention on March 3-7, 2021.

Seeking Applications for the HNBA Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition:

HLLSA is looking for 2L, 3L, and 4L students interested in participating in the Hispanic National Bar Association’s 26th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition. The competition brings together 32 teams of law students from the nation’s top law schools to argue a case currently before the United States Supreme Court. The 2021 competition will take place virtually on March 9-12, 2021 (note: this will occur during dates scheduled for regular class sessions).

• Each school may send one team of up to three students. The application process is open to any student in their second year of law school and above, regardless of their involvement in HLLSA. The moot court team is selected by a committee of HLLSA board members and Moot Court Honor Society board members. If you are interested please submit the following materials directly to hllsa:

  • A legal writing sample (PDF format, full appellate brief from Legal Writing II preferred, but all submissions welcome)

  • Your resume (not necessary to list GPA)

  • A brief statement on why you are interested in competing in a moot court competition, which includes whether you are able to work on the brief over winter break

• The selection committee intends on following this timeline:

  • Applications open: November 2nd

  • Deadline to submit application materials: Monday November 30th at 11:59pm

  • Selected applicants will be notified by December 7th

  • Register the selected team for through the HNBA website (week of December 7th)

  • The competition is March 9-12th. The competition will take place virtually.

Join International Moot Court Honor Society: Due to the abrupt end to the Spring semester, the International Moot Court Honor Society (IMCHS) was unable to elect new officers. Professor Bartram Brown is looking to recruit students to 1) become an officer for IMCHS, and/or 2) compete in the Jessup International Law Moot Court competition in the Spring. Applications for Jessup are due soon, so we are looking for students ASAP. Once registered, team briefs will be due in January and the (virtual) competition is currently scheduled for March. If you are interested please fill out this form by Friday, 10/30 at 5pm. Once we have compiled interest, Professor Brown will be in touch with interested students.

Spring 2021 Semester Law Firm Associate Program: Chicago-Kent’s Semester Law Firm Associate Program (SLFAP) is a unique for-credit non-graded program open to 2Ls and 3Ls with a cumulative minimum 3.2 GPA. Semester Associate externs work for academic credit (without pay) as “Associates” for the designated and prestigious law firms listed

below. Semester Associate externs receive 6 credits and devote 24 hours a week during the semester to the fieldwork component. Students gain experience, skills and perspective from work on different aspects of litigation and transactions. The firms strive to expose students to a range of legal problems demanding varying skill sets and competencies. In conjunction with the fieldwork, there is an accompanying classroom component, scheduled on designated Thursdays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Even though COVID will require most of the fieldwork experience to be remote, this is still a terrific opportunity to learn about life in a law firm, substantive law from highly qualified practicing attorneys, more about your own strengths and interests, and to make an impression on the lawyers with whom you come into contact (even though there is no expectation of future employment). Since the start of COVID, all the previous effected externs will tell you that the necessary limitations in no way affected the success of their externship experience. Legal Externship Program Opportunity @ Seyfarth Shaw, LLP: For 2L & 3L applicants, for credit only (4 Credits). As part of Chicago-Kent’s Spring 2021 Legal Externship Program, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, will select a Chicago-Kent student extern. The extern essentially becomes a member of the firm’s IP group for a semester, performing legal research and writing in copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, advertising, privacy, Internet, and other related IP issues. The position is not limited to people with technical backgrounds.

The selected extern will receive 4 (Pass/Fail) credit hours and must devote 16 hours a week to fieldwork, which will be performed primarily, if not completely, remotely depending on the circumstances. There will also be an accompanying non-graded classroom component on designated Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. This is a great externship opportunity! Spring Break/Spring Semester: The revised Spring calendar is posted on the Chicago-Kent website. If you have any thoughts or questions please email the fall2020 email account. Student Zoom Monitors Volunteers Needed for Virtual Conference for Teachers in Civics, Law, and Government, October 23: The Constitutional Democracy Project under the direction of Professor Carolyn Shapiro and Project Director Dee Runaas are looking for approximately 15 student volunteers to monitor teacher professional development sessions on Friday, October 23 from 8:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m. CDP is seeking one volunteer per session. Each session is 75 minutes long and is being presented by either a legal scholar, teacher, or civics advocate. Zoom Monitor tasks include:

• Signing on 10 minutes before the session is scheduled to begin to make sure the presenter has signed on and everything is working correctly.

• After the session begins, volunteers will monitor the session and help resolve any technical issues that may arise.

• Volunteers will be assigned a co-host role so they can mute people if there is background noise, monitor the chat to see if attendees are sending private messages about problems or other questions, and escort people out of the meeting if for some reason attendees are being disruptive.

The Immigration Law Society is currently looking for 2Ls and 3Ls who are interested in participating in the NYU Immigration Law Moot Court Competition. The Immigration Law Competition focuses on issues in the field of immigration law and is judged by panels of distinguished NYU alumni and legal practitioners from throughout New York. The final round is judged by federal appellate and district court judges. The competition will take place Friday, February 12 through Sunday, February 14, 2021. Due to Covid-19, the competition will be held remotely. If you are interested in participating, please email Amanda Ortiz no later than Monday, October 19, 2020.

Volunteers needed for a NEW Chicago-Kent project. Future Ties is a community-based non-profit, that provides after-school and summer programs for students. Discover Law is a pipeline program run by the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), that CK has partnered with in the past on programs similar to this one. The program is searching for 4 law students to sign-up to volunteer for 5 of the 6 sessions. You can sign up for one session, or multiple sessions. The sessions will start this week on Thursday, October 15th, and be from 4:00pm – 5:00pm for six weeks (two mock trial sessions will go until 5:30pm). Please visit the sign-up sheet and sign up to volunteer if you can commit to the time and date of the session. If you can’t make it this time, there is a place on the sign-up sheet to indicate your interest in participating in the future.

KJF Justice Walk: In lieu of our Annual Wine Night, Kent Justice Foundation will be hosting the First Annual "Justice Walk" on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Lincoln Montrose Running Track (4400 N Lakeshore Drive). Participants are also welcome to join us virtually through social media. 95% of the funds raised will go directly to the KJF Fellowship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students who secure unpaid public interest internships. The remaining 5% of our proceeds will be donated to SOUL Chicago. Everybody who signs up will be automatically entered to a raffle. Additionally, we are giving out prizes to (a) the student who walks the longest distance and (b) the student who raises the most money. C-K Mental Health Coffee Talks: Coffee Talks offer a forum for students to discuss mental health and stress management. 3L students will talk about their experiences in law school and take questions from any students in attendance. The goal of the event is to provide 1L students with an opportunity to discuss the stresses of law school and hear about study strategies, personal organization tips, and mental health practices that helped older students succeed in law school. The next Coffee Talk will take place on Tuesday, October 20, from 12 – 1.

Celebrate Pro Bono: NEW Pro-Bono tracking system. Please join the Public Interest Resource Center, SBA’s Philanthropy Committee, and the Career Services Offices to learn about the NEW Pro-Bono hours tracking system. If you volunteer in any capacity or would like to, this informational meeting is for you. We will also collect your ideas and share upcoming Pro-Bono Events and opportunities. We will have a short presentation from Angela Inzano of the Chicago Bar Foundation about the upcoming 27th Annual Pro Bono & Community Service Fair – a virtual event this year that she is organizing. We look forward to seeing you zoom in this Tuesday, October 20th from 12-1PM.

Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS): Come hear from Banner Witcoff attorneys and learn what it is like to work at an IP Boutique firm in Chicago! Banner Witcoff Presentation on IP Boutique Practice will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020; the link is in the SBA Calendar.

Mental Health and Student Relations Committee Presents Guided Wellness Sessions

Come join us for half hour guided sessions aimed at reducing both mental and physical stress. Find your school life balance through easy-to-follow breathing instructions and at-your-desk stretches. Led by members of the Mental Health and Student Relations Committee. There are two upcoming sessions both on Wednesday October 21st from 10-10 AM and 5-530 PM. Hope to see you there!

The National Immigrant Justice Center invites you to join them on October 22, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. CT for the Virtual 5th Annual NIJC Pro Bono Celebration! RSVP here. Spring 2021 Legal Externship Program Informational Meeting: Professor Gross will conduct an informational meeting on Spring 2021 Legal Externships at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 via Zoom. Requesting reasonable accommodations: As a follow-up to our insurance discussion, DALSA will discuss what can be a reasonable accommodation on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 from 12 pm – 1 pm. We will have students discuss the type of accommodations they have requested in law school; strategies for communicating with medical professionals to get those accommodations; and getting accommodations for the bar exam. LURE Webinars: This fall, the Land Use & Real Estate club is hosting a number of webinars with real estate professionals from throughout the industry. Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) is pleased to host the Patent Hub Intro with Roger Rozanski at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Voter Registration Event: We all know how important this election is, so REAA, ACS, SBA, HLLSA, MLSA, ACLU, SALSA, and KJF felt that it was their civic duty to create an event where people have another opportunity to register to vote. We also know that there is an issue with the lack of access to technology to register to vote, so we will be using six computers and three routers to make sure people can complete their registration online. We will be having this event at Armour Philip Square Park, 3309 S. Shields Ave. Chicago, IL. 60616. It will take place on October 14th, from 9-2pm. We will be passing out goodie bags containing hand sanitizer, a “vote” pin, a mask that says “vote,” and a pamphlet with information on how to vote. *COVID-19 safety guidelines will be enforced.

The Chicago-Kent College of Law Offices of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Continuing Legal Education, and the Chicago-Kent Environmental Law Society present:

The First-Generation Law Student Association, with the Criminal Law Society and CSO, are proud to invite you to our first legal panel. BLSA Alumni Panel Event: Please join Chicago-Kent’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and the Office of Career Services virtually on Thursday, October 15th at 7 p.m. CST for an alumni panel. The purpose of the event is to inform upper-class law students on the process of taking the bar examination and securing full-time employment after graduation. BLSA Out of Darkness Walk: This year, the Out of Darkness Walk will look a little different. We will have a virtual option as well as an in-person option. The walk is scheduled for October 17th and 18th. This walk and message has always been important, but even more so this year because our fellow classmate and BLSA member would have been graduating with us this year. This walk will celebrate his life and bring us all together to fight suicide.

• You can sign up to be on our team and also donate to our team here

• If you want to participate virtually, you can walk on either day or both, it is completely up to you. If you want to share to social media your walk for suicide prevention, then tag #TogetherToFightSuicide and #CKBLSA

• If you want to participate in person, the walk will take place on October 17th at 12pm. We will all meet at 31st Street Beach and walk to 12th Street and back. Everyone must abide by the COVID-19 guidelines, so please bring a mask and social distance as much as you can. The walk will be approximately 6 miles.

DALSA Presents: School insurance: How does it work?: Are you new to the School’s health insurance? Are you confused on how to find a doctor or your ID card? Unsure about what the school insurance covers. On Friday, October 2, 2020 from 5 pm – 6 pm we will discuss how to access your ID card, find a doctor, and what potential out-of-pocket expenses, deductibles, or co-pays expenses there may be. We will walk through these things and answer any questions people have. We will also quickly discuss the process of requesting reasonable accommodations as a student through the school. The Chicago-Kent Student Organizations Fair continues this week! It will take place virtually on Tuesday, September 15 and Thursday, September 17 from 5-6 pm. “What Does the Constitution Say About Voting?” hosted by Chicago-Kent’s Constitutional Democracy Project and Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2020, at 4 pm CT. This panel will focus on the history of the right to vote in this country and the role of federalism in defining the scope and operation of the right. Register here for the event.

HLLSA presents Academic Success Workshop for 1L Students and Happy Hour, Friday September 18, 2020 from 3-5 PM, followed by happy hour 5PM+. Prof. Peter Wendel’s workshop addresses topics relevant for any first-year law student, including effective note-taking, how to brief cases, and preparing for the exam. Afterwards, join 2L and 3L Students at a virtual happy hour (BYOD – Bring Your Own Drinks/Devices) for discussions on their study habits and tips for success in law school. HLLSA Mentorship Program and 1L Representatives: Hispanic Latinx Law Student Association is accepting submissions for (1) 1L and 2L students interested in being partnered with a Hispanic/Latinx student mentor (hllsa stating why you want to become more involved in HLLSA and your goals in law school.

Parents and Caregivers of Chicago-Kent (PACCK) invites all students to join in supporting our peers who bear responsibility in caring for loved ones while enrolled in law school through advocacy, awareness, and networking. Please view the attached pacck.

Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Revival: The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at Chicago-Kent College of Law has been inactive for a couple of years, but we are looking to reactivate it this year! SALDF is an organization of students who are interested in animal law, advocating for animal rights, or simply just have a passion for animals. SALDF is dedicated to protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system. Our mission is to powerfully advocate for changing laws to better protect animals and to raise awareness regarding various legislation and policies detrimental to animals throughout our country.
