s | b | a CHICAGO-KENT STUDENT BAR ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

September 12, 2022

Announcements

Spring 2023 Judicial Externship Program: On Tuesday, October 4, at 12 p.m., via Zoom, Professor Gross will conduct an informational meeting for students interested in participating in the Spring 2023 Judicial Externship Program. Some recent judicial externs will be attending the informational meeting to give you their perspective. If you wish to be added to the calendar invite, please email Suzanne Blaz.

Applications for Spring 2023 Judicial Externships will be available electronically by Friday, September 16, 2022, on Symplicity and the sblaz) by Friday, October 14, 2022.

Conviser Law Center Dedication Ceremony: Chicago-Kent’s home, 565 West Adams Street, has been renamed Conviser Law Center in recognition of Professor Richard Conviser’s lifelong service to Chicago-Kent and the legal community. To commemorate this profound moment in the school’s history, there will be a community celebration in honor of Professor Conviser on September 29 at 4:00 p.m. at Conviser Law Center.

Please join other students, faculty, staff, and Chicago-Kent alumni for this very special event. It would mean a lot to Professor Conviser to see as many current Chicago-Kent students there as possible. For more information and to register, please visit here.

1L Mandatory CSO Orientation: The Career Services Office will on Tuesday, September 13th be having a mandatory 1L Orientation from 12:00pm-1:25pm (Day 1Ls) in the auditorium and 5:00pm-6:00pm (Evening 1Ls) in C40. 1Ls will meet with their assigned counselors for the first time and learn about upcoming opportunities.

Yoga in the Fitness Center: There will be yoga in the fitness center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am-10:00am throughout the semester. Yoga mats and blocks will be provided!

Student Organization Leadership: If you are part of leadership for an organization and have not received an email or signed up for leadership training, we will consider the organization defunct unless you fill out the SBA Leadership Contact Info Form and RSVP for the Leadership Training by September 14.

The Leadership Training will be this Sunday, September 18th from 12-1:30pm in Room C20

New Organization Requests: If you are planning to form a new organization, please reach out to the SBA with bylaws, a faculty advisor (optional) and preliminary executive board membership. New student organizations can be considered throughout the year, but if you would like to be included for leadership training, you will need to let us know by September 14.

November Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE): The November MPRE will be administered on November 14th or 15th. The MPRE is required for licensure in all jurisdictions except Wisconsin. You may take it after you sit for the bar exam but I would encourage you to take it prior if possible since you cannot get sworn in until you’ve passed it. Most students take the exam after they take Professional Responsibility at CK, in their 2nd semester 2L year, or sometime during their 3L year.

The exam costs $150 and the deadline to register is WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2022.

Please visit NCBEX for registration information and/or to register for the exam.

While it’s helpful to have taken Professional Responsibility prior to the exam, it’s not required. Most commercial bar companies provide FREE MPRE review workshops that include outlines, a lecture, and practice questions. Please stop by 310B with questions or if you need an MPRE outline book.

The Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property: The Journal of Intellectual Property is currently looking for students to join the team as Associate Editors. Please find their message below, and contact them directly with any questions.

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

The Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property ("CKJIP") is a student-run publication at Chicago-Kent College of Law that publishes articles on a wide variety of IP-related topics. Notable authors include current and former federal judges, Patent Office administrators, and professors from leading law schools. The Journal endeavors to publish 5-10 articles bi-annually, usually in December and May. The Journal is also the official publication of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board Bar Association.

The Journal looks to staff teams of 4-6 students that edit and check each article’s citations for form and to verify the sources cited support the author’s assertions. There is also a team of Submissions Editors (a role that is open to upper level students) that reviews article submissions and determines if each article meets criteria for publication with the Journal. Additionally, students can receive one credit for journal participation every semester provided they meet an hours and writing requirement in addition to their journal role.

Completed issues are published online in Chicago-Kent’s Scholarly Commons, a Bepress repository that optimizes the issues for search via Google. This repository is located at https://scholarship.kentlaw.iit.edu/ckjip/ and is managed by Chicago-Kent’s library staff. Each published article can freely be accessed through the Journal’s website, as well as through searches in Westlaw, LexisNexis, and HeinOnline (after the completed issue is published). The Journal may also continue to publicize articles through its website, social media platforms, blog posts, and invited commentaries.

How to get involved:

  • Stop by our table at the Organization Fair on August 30th!

  • The Journal is taking applications until Tuesday, September 6th

  • To apply please email the following to journal:

    • a current resume

    • a letter of interest (1 paragraph explaining why you are interested in the journal)

  • We especially encourage 1L and LLM students to apply and get involved!"

SBA Newsletter – July 2022

s | b | a CHICAGO-KENT STUDENT BAR ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

July 14, 2022

Announcements

Hope everyone is having a great summer! Newsletters will be sent out over the summer as updates are available. We will resume weekly newsletters at the start of the fall semester.

ACLU of Illinois Fellowship Opportunity: The Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois (ACLU of Illinois) is currently accepting applications from qualified rising third-year law students and recent law graduates with a commitment to civil rights and civil liberties and strong legal research and writing skills, who seek a host organization for an externally-funded fellowship. The focus of this fellowship will be investigating and litigating violations of the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which affords a right to adequate legal representation to people who have been charged with a crime and face the possibility of jail time, regardless of their ability to pay for an attorney.

Applicants should send the following materials to fellowshipcommittee:

  • A current resume

  • A cover letter

  • clearly stating the academic year or other timeframe for which you seek a fellowship;

  • specifying the name(s) and deadline(s) of the fellowship(s) for which you are applying; and

  • describing your commitment to civil rights and civil liberties, as well as efforts to transform the criminal legal system, to protect the rights of marginalized groups impacted by the criminal legal system, and to combat systemic racism.

Priority consideration will be given to those who contact us before August 1. Later applications will also be considered. We review submissions on a rolling basis.

Cook County Public Defender Hiring Fall 2022 Interns: The Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender provides law students the opportunity to learn more about the criminal and juvenile justice systems by participating in our Internship Program as a volunteer. The Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender is currently organized into several divisions: Juvenile Justice, Legal Resources (Appeals and Post-Conviction), Felony Trial, Multiple Defendants, First Municipal (Misdemeanor, Traffic and Domestic Violence), Civil (Child Protection and Mental Health), Homicide Task Force, Police Station Representation Unit and five suburban division (Bridgeview, Markham, Maywood, Rolling Meadows and Skokie).

The program is typically a 6 to 12 week assignment. Volunteers are assigned to work with specific attorneys and/or on specific projects. Typically, students are expected to volunteer at least 12 hours per week during the summer, fall, or spring program. They may be assigned to any of the divisions within the office provided they meet the qualifications. The number of volunteers allowed to work in the office will be determined by the Public Defender at the beginning of each semester. Some students may receive academic credit and/or a stipend through their school for their volunteer work, but they are required to make their own arrangements with their educational institutions to receive such credit and/or funding.

More information and the application are available here. Applications close July 19, 2022.
